Guardians Explode in Sixth to Force Game 5, Sending White Sox to Brink

The Cleveland Guardians didn’t just beat the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night at Rate Field. They absolutely obliterated them when it mattered most, pouring six runs across the plate in the sixth inning to secure a 9-5 victory and force a decisive Game 5 in this ALDS series. This wasn’t a close call. This was a gut punch delivered by a team that refused to go quietly into the October night.

José Ramírez was the hammer. The Guardians’ perennial All-Star went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run blast in the sixth that traveling at 103.1 mph and served as the dagger to Chicago’s fading hopes. Patrick Bailey wasn’t far behind, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs of his own. When your middle of the order shows up like this in an elimination game, you’re going to win. It’s that simple.

But here’s where this game gets interesting, and frankly, a bit frustrating if you’re wearing a White Sox uniform. Cleveland’s pitching was, to put it mildly, a mess early on. Anthony Kay lasted just 0.1 innings, surrendering two earned runs before getting yanked. For a team fighting for its postseason life, watching your starting pitcher implode in such spectacular fashion had to feel like a death sentence. Erik Sabrowski came in and stabilized things, but the damage to Chicago’s psyche was already done.

The White Sox Had Their Chances

Credit where it’s due: Chicago wasn’t a pushover. The White Sox got out to an early 2-0 lead behind some smart baserunning and solid at-bats from their middle order. Munetaka Murakami’s RBI walk in the third and sacrifice flies from Sam Antonacci and Brenton Doyle kept the South Siders competitive through five innings. Miguel Vargas even tacked on a solo homer in the ninth for good measure. But in playoff baseball, good enough rarely is.

Cleveland’s Sixth-Inning Avalanche

Guardians take the lead with six-run 6th inning

The sixth inning was essentially a baseball crime scene. Travis Bazzana doubled to start the carnage. Bailey singled. Ramírez added another hit. Chase DeLauter poked one through. Jo Adell delivered the knockout blow with a two-run single. By the time the dust settled, the Guardians had plated six runs off Chicago’s bullpen, and the game was effectively over despite two innings remaining. This was the moment Cleveland’s season was saved, plain and simple.

What makes this victory particularly sweet for the Guardians is that it was built on the backs of their best players performing when the spotlight was brightest. No role players bailing them out. No fluky breaks. Just straight-up, old-fashioned offensive dominance from the guys who are supposed to carry the load. That’s how you steal a playoff game on the road.

For Chicago, this is devastating. The White Sox had opportunities to close this series out but instead will head back to Cleveland for Game 5 facing a Guardians team that just reminded everyone why they’re dangerous. Will Venable’s squad showed some fight Thursday night, but it simply wasn’t enough. In October, almost never is.
