Padres Power Past Rockies in Coors Field Slugfest, 8-7

The San Diego Padres came to Denver on Monday night and did what too few teams do at Coors Field: they left with a win. In a game that featured more offense than a batting practice session, the Padres scratched out an 8-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies in a contest that proved both teams can hit but only one can get the job done when it matters.

This was supposed to be a pitching duel. It wasn’t. Casey Mize lasted just five innings for the Padres, surrendering eight hits and six earned runs while striking out nobody. Tomoyuki Sugano didn’t fare much better for Colorado, also going five innings and yielding eight hits and six earned runs. When both starting pitchers are getting knocked around like a pinata at a kid’s birthday party, you know you’re in for a wild ride.

Padres’ Bats Do the Heavy Lifting

Manny Machado got things rolling early, crushing a solo homer in the first inning to give San Diego an immediate 1-0 lead. Then Fernando Tatis Jr. came through in the second with a two-run blast that extended the advantage to 4-1. These weren’t cheap hits at Coors Field either, especially Tatis’s 449-foot missile that would’ve cleared most ballparks in North America.

The Padres’ lineup was relentless. Ty France went 3-for-5, Jackson Merrill went 3-for-5, and Jake Cronenworth added two hits with an RBI. This wasn’t one guy carrying the load, this was a complete offensive effort. San Diego built what should have been a commanding lead, but Coors Field had other ideas.

Rockies Won’t Go Quietly

Colorado refused to roll over. The Rockies chipped away relentlessly, scoring single runs in the first and fifth before Jake McCarthy absolutely smoked a triple in the sixth that plated two more runs and made it a one-run game at 6-5. Cole Carrigg added a solo shot in the seventh to keep things interesting, and Connor Norby’s double in the eighth scored another run to tie things up at seven apiece.

The Rockies had every opportunity to steal this game. They scored in four different innings, they had runners in scoring position repeatedly, and they never quit. But they also couldn’t deliver the knockout punch. TJ Rumfield was their hardest worker with two RBI singles, but it wasn’t enough against a Padres team that simply had more offense in the tank.

Dustin Harris broke the deadlock in the top of the eighth with an RBI double that scored Xander Bogaerts. San Diego 8, Colorado 7. That proved to be the game-winner. Mason Miller came in and shut the door with a perfect inning, striking out two to earn the save and send the Padres back to California with a crucial road victory.

This was baseball at its most entertaining and simultaneously most frustrating, depending on which dugout you were rooting for. The Padres got timely hits, the Rockies didn’t. That’s really what separates winners from losers in September. The Padres proved they want to win. The Rockies showed they can compete. Only one team is leaving Denver with the W on Monday night, and it’s the one that capitalized when it counted.
