Guardians Dismantle Twins Behind Kwan, Bazzana Offensive Onslaught

The Cleveland Guardians came to Minnesota on Sunday and reminded the Twins exactly why they’re playing October baseball while Joe Ryan and company are already thinking about next season. The Guardians’ potent lineup put on a masterclass in aggressive, timely hitting, dismantling the Twins 9-2 in a game that was never competitive after the first three innings.

Steven Kwan set the tone immediately, launching a leadoff homer in the top of the first that sent an unmistakable message to Target Field: this wasn’t going to be a tight, gritty affair. Kwan would finish 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, and 2 RBIs, looking every bit the disciplined, dangerous hitter the Guardians have built their lineup around.

But here’s where the Twins’ pitching staff truly fell apart. Joe Ryan, who came into Sunday looking like Minnesota’s ace, simply didn’t have it. He lasted just four innings, surrendering seven hits and four runs while striking out only one batter. That’s not acceptable from a team’s front-line starter in a playoff-contending September. The Twins needed length, they needed control, and they got neither.

Bazzana and Adell Deliver the Knockout Blows

Travis Bazzana continued his strong September push with 2-for-4 performance that included a two-run blast in the sixth inning. The Canadian star is clearly settling into big moments, and on Sunday he was a force multiplier in Cleveland’s offensive barrage. Three RBIs from Bazzana basically sealed the game before the seventh-inning stretch.

Jo Adell, meanwhile, provided one of the day’s most electrifying moments with a 451-foot moonshot to left field that had absolutely no business staying in the park. Well, technically it did, because it did, but the raw power on display was stunning. Adell finished with two hits and two RBIs, part of a Guardians team that looked absolutely locked in at the plate.

Tanner Bibee was efficient and effective for Cleveland, scattering four hits over 6.2 innings while striking out seven Twins batters. He didn’t need to be spectacular because his offense was doing all the heavy lifting, but Bibee’s ability to work in and out of trouble without surrendering big damage was exactly what you want from a starting pitcher in September.

Minnesota’s Futile Effort

The Twins managed only two runs, both on a solo shot by Trevor Larnach and an earlier RBI double from Kody Clemens. Larnach’s homer was respectable enough, a solo shot to right field that at least gave Minnesota something on the scoreboard. But one solo homer doesn’t cut it when you’re facing this kind of offensive firepower from the visitors.

The reality is brutal but simple: Cleveland came into Target Field with a superior offense on Sunday, executed at a higher level, and left with a decisive statement victory. The Twins have issues to address before October arrives, starting with getting more consistent production from their starting pitching. Ryan’s four-inning outing should concern Minnesota’s front office. If that’s the best they can muster from their ace against a legitimate contender, they’ll have a short postseason.

The Guardians, meanwhile, continue to look like a team built to win in October. When Kwan, Bazzana, and Adell are all clicking simultaneously, they’re virtually impossible to stop.
