Rodriguez Masterclass Shuts Down Cubs as D-backs Win 2-0

Sometimes baseball is beautifully, brutally simple. On Wednesday night at Chase Field, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs served up a reminder that in this game, dominant pitching will always trump offensive impotence. The D-backs won 2-0, and honestly, the Cubs should have felt fortunate it wasn’t worse.

Eduardo Rodriguez was nothing short of spectacular. Seven innings, just two hits, zero earned runs, and nine strikeouts. That’s the kind of outing that makes opposing hitters want to check the schedule to see when they can avoid facing him again. Rodriguez didn’t blow anyone away with his fastball, but he didn’t need to. He mixed his arsenal with surgical precision, keeping the Cubs hitters off-balance and utterly helpless at the plate. The man was a magician out there, and the Cubs lineup had no counterspell.

Matthew Boyd kept the Cubs competitive, no question about that. Six innings with just one run allowed shows he wasn’t a liability. But here’s the thing about baseball at this level: being solid isn’t enough. You need to be exceptional, and Rodriguez was simply on a different plane. Boyd allowed three hits and two walks in his six innings of work, while striking out five. It was a respectable performance that would win most nights. Wednesday wasn’t most nights.

The scoring was sparse, predictable given the pitching dominance. Jordan Lawlar provided the first dagger in the sixth inning with a solo homer to right field, his third of the season. It was a solo shot, but in a game played at this tempo and with this kind of offensive futility from the opposition, one run felt like five. Lawlar was the only D-back to really make an impact offensively, collecting two hits in three at-bats.

The second run came in the eighth, though it required some help from the Cubs’ own carelessness. Ryan Waldschmidt’s sacrifice double play, with Seiya Suzuki to Michael Busch turning the twin killing, allowed James McCann to scamper home. It was an unconventional way to score, but in a 2-0 game, you take what you can get. Juan Morillo‘s save was essentially a coronation. One inning, no hits, no runs, no drama.

The Cubs Left Everything on the Bench

Here’s what irritates me about this loss from the Cubs’ perspective: they came to Arizona without any fight. Two hits through nine innings is not a baseball game, it’s a surrender. Craig Counsell will probably point to Rodriguez’s brilliance, and he’d have a point, but championship-caliber teams find ways to scrape out runs even when the pitcher is dealing. The Cubs didn’t even try.

Arizona Takes Control

For the Diamondbacks, this was exactly the kind of win that builds momentum. Rodriguez putting on a clinic followed by a competent bullpen finish is the formula for October baseball. Torey Lovullo has his rotation clicking at the right time, and with the season winding down, that’s worth its weight in gold.

The Cubs will get another chance at this D-backs team, but they need to figure out how to generate some actual offense. Coming to Chase Field and managing just two hits is unacceptable for any team with playoff aspirations.
