Astros Edge Angels in Chaotic Wednesday: Vázquez, Altuve Deliver in Fourth

Sometimes baseball rewards you for showing up. Sometimes it punishes you for not closing the deal. Wednesday night at Daikin Park belonged squarely to the Houston Astros, who scraped together just enough offensive firepower to outlast the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 in a game that was equal parts compelling and bewildering.

The Angels came in looking sharp. Walbert Ureña was solid on the mound, striking out seven batters across five innings while allowing just three hits and two walks. For stretches, you could see the makings of a dominant pitching performance. Problem is, three runs were all Houston needed, and the Angels could only manage two in return. That’s not championship baseball. That’s not even competitive baseball. That’s a team leaving money on the table.

Christian Vázquez's solo home run (7)

Christian Vázquez got the Astros rolling in the third with a solo shot to left, a no-doubter that gave Houston an early 1-0 advantage. Vázquez, catching for rookie sensation Ethan Pecko in his MLB debut, proved why he remains one of the league’s craftiest veterans. The man just knows how to win at-bats.

Jose Altuve's RBI double

Then came the fourth inning, and this is where things got interesting. Denzer Guzman‘s two-run double off the bat would’ve been nothing special except for one detail: fan interference. The call stood, and suddenly the Angels had clawed back into the game with Guzman’s hit scoring Vaughn Grissom and Josh Lowe to put Los Angeles ahead 2-1. For a moment, you could feel the momentum shifting.

But Houston refused to fold. Jose Altuve, that magnificent irritant of an opponent, ripped a sharp line drive double down the left field line that plated Yordan Alvarez and sent Isaac Paredes to third. Just like that, the Astros reclaimed the lead 2-2. Cam Smith followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Paredes, giving Houston the 3-2 advantage they would not relinquish.

Relief and Chaos in the Ninth

Bennett Sousa got the victory after pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless ball, which is frankly absurd for how little he threw. But that’s the nature of modern baseball bullpen usage. Josh Hader, the Astros’ closer, slammed the door with a perfect inning, allowing one walk but no hits. The Angels had their chances, but they couldn’t capitalize when it mattered.

What made this game truly memorable was the carnival atmosphere surrounding it. Joe Espada got tossed in the third inning, presumably because the baseball gods decided we needed extra drama. Jeremy Peña left with a right hand contusion. And perhaps most notably, Ethan Pecko made his MLB debut and struck out four batters. The kid showed promise, even if the statistical line won’t blow anyone away.

The Bottom Line

The Angels had every opportunity to steal this game on the road. Instead, they left runs on the table and got caught holding the short end of a close contest. Ureña pitched well. Mike Trout was in the lineup. None of it mattered. Houston’s fourth-inning explosion proved decisive, and sometimes that’s all it takes. The Astros will take the win and move forward. The Angels will wonder what might have been.
