Clemens’ three RBIs power Twins past Braves in Target Field shootout

Sometimes a game comes down to who wants it more in those critical middle innings, and on Wednesday at Target Field, the Minnesota Twins showed they were far hungrier than the visiting Atlanta Braves. In a back-and-forth affair that saw both offenses put runners in scoring position with regularity, Minnesota prevailed 6-4 behind Kody Clemens‘ three-RBI performance that essentially buried the Braves’ comeback hopes before they could fully materialize.

Let’s be clear about what happened here: this was a bullpen game masquerading as a meaningful contest. Victor Mederos lasted just 1.1 innings for Atlanta before getting yanked, and A.J. Minter‘s 0.2 inning appearance for Minnesota suggests both teams were working through their depth charts like it was September call-up season. But here’s what matters: the Twins’ depth was sharper, more decisive, and frankly, more competent when it mattered.

Kody Clemens' two-run double

Clemens takes over in the fifth

The fifth inning proved to be the game’s turning point, and Clemens was the executioner. After Josh Bell drew an RBI walk to push Minnesota’s lead to 2-1, Clemens stepped up and delivered a two-run double on a sharp fly ball to right that scored Luke Keaschall and Byron Buxton. Just like that, it was 4-1 Twins, and the Braves were staring down the barrel of a deficit they’d never fully overcome despite their late-inning heroics.

Condensed Game: ATL@MIN – 8/19/26

Atlanta tried to mount a comeback in the sixth. Matt Olson scored on a Lane Thomas single, and Michael Harris II came home on an Ozzie Albies sacrifice fly. Ronald Acuña Jr., never one to fade quietly into the background, had already contributed an RBI single in the fifth that kept the Braves within shouting distance. But shouting distance isn’t good enough in August baseball, and the Braves learned that lesson the hard way.

Lane Thomas' RBI single

Clemens ices it in the seventh

If there was any doubt remaining about Clemens’ credentials as a clutch performer, he erased them in the seventh with another RBI single that scored Josh Bell and gave Minnesota a 5-4 advantage. Brooks Lee added another insurance run with his own RBI single moments later, pushing the margin to 6-4. By that point, the game was over, even if Atlanta’s bats hadn’t fully accepted it yet.

Kody Clemens' go-ahead single

What’s genuinely infuriating about this loss for the Braves is how winnable it was. They generated traffic on the bases throughout the afternoon. Kaelen Culpepper was a machine for Minnesota, collecting three hits. Byron Buxton’s fielder’s choice RBI in the third got the Twins rolling early. But Atlanta couldn’t capitalize consistently enough, and that’s the cardinal sin in baseball.

Brooks Lee's RBI single

The pitching was understandably chaotic with all the early substitutions, but Yoendrys Gómez cleaned up nicely in the save situation with a scoreless seventh. That matters. In a game this sloppy and reliant on offensive execution, getting your closer through scoreless innings is essentially half the battle.

Walt Weiss’ ejection in the eighth (per the highlight package) suggests the Braves’ frustration boiled over, which is understandable. This game was there for the taking if Atlanta’s bats had matched Minnesota’s clutch execution. They didn’t. The Twins sweep the series, Clemens goes home a hero, and the Braves go home wondering why they couldn’t finish when it mattered.
