Tigers Edge Guardians Behind McGonigle’s Clutch Hitting

Jo Adell added a long ball of his own in the eighth inning and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth, keeping the Guardians dangerously close down the stretch. Both players showed power, but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome the early deficit.

Jansen Escapes Late Scare

Here’s where it got interesting. Kenley Jansen came in for the save situation in the ninth, and the veteran closer looked shaky. He walked two batters with only one inning to work but induced a crucial groundout to escape unscathed. For a closer of Jansen’s pedigree, you expect that kind of execution in high-leverage moments, but it doesn’t mean it’s not stressful to watch.

The Guardians left everything on the field in the ninth, scratching and clawing for another run, but they couldn’t quite get over the hump. Steven Kwan scored twice and José Ramírez drove in a run, showing that the Cleveland lineup has teeth. The problem is they showed up too late, and Tanner Bibee’s subpar outing meant they were always chasing.

This game won’t make the highlight reels. Jacob Waguespack threw just two scoreless innings of relief for Detroit, but that’s all the Tigers needed from their bullpen. Both teams made plays, both teams showed flashes of competence, but only one team made the right plays at the right time.
