Tigers Walk Off in 10th, Stun Giants at Oracle Park
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Sometimes the best baseball games are the ones that don’t go according to plan. Sunday at Oracle Park, the Detroit Tigers turned what looked like a frustrating day of futility into a knockout punch in the 10th inning, walking off with a 3-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants that had all the drama of a playoff thriller.
Pitching Decisions
Star Performers
For nine innings, this was a pitcher’s duel that favored neither side in any meaningful way. Then the Tigers’ bullpen came through when it absolutely mattered, and suddenly Hao-Yu Lee was lining a single to right field that sent Riley Greene flying around the bases with the go-ahead run.
This wasn’t pretty baseball. It was the kind of win that tests a team’s resolve, and the Tigers passed with flying colors. Sam Hentges imploded for the Giants in the 10th, unable to record a single out while allowing two hits and one earned run. It was the kind of collapse that haunts a pitching staff, especially when you’re trying to stay in a crowded Wild Card race.
Bullpen Arms Trump Giants’ Pitching
Kenley Jansen deserves serious credit here. The veteran right-hander came in cold and struck out three batters in a scoreless inning, setting the stage for what came next. Tyler Holton then sealed it with another perfect frame, punching out three more Giants in the bottom of the 10th. That’s six strikeouts combined in two innings from two Detroit arms. You don’t win games on the road with that kind of pitching performance.
The Giants had their chances early. Drew Gilbert‘s fielder’s choice grounder in the seventh scored Osleivis Basabe to give San Francisco a 1-0 lead. It felt like it might hold up for most of this game. But the Tigers’ patience paid dividends, and when Max Clark grounded into a force out in the tenth, Lee scampered home to make it 2-1. Those two runs in the final frame proved to be all Detroit needed.
Detroit’s Road Trip Excellence Continues
This victory keeps the Tigers’ impressive road trip rolling. Coming into the Bay Area, they had questions about whether they could win on enemy turf against quality competition. Sunday answered that question emphatically. Hao-Yu Lee and the rest of Detroit’s lineup refused to quit, grinding through ten innings against a Giants team that simply couldn’t close the deal when it mattered most.
The Giants left plenty of meat on the bone here. Logan Webb pitched reasonably well in regulation, but Sam Hentges’ inability to pitch just one clean inning in the tenth was a killer. In extra innings, that’s often the difference between celebration and devastation, and the Giants got the short end of that stick.
For Detroit, this is exactly the type of victory that builds championship mentality. You don’t come into Oracle Park, play nine innings of mostly forgettable baseball, and then steal a game in the tenth without developing some serious character. The Tigers are heading home with momentum, and San Francisco is left wondering what might have been with better pitching execution when it mattered most.
