Rays Survive Marathon at Coors: Hicks’ Grand Slam Ignites 9-7 Extra-Inning Victory

Well, well, well. If you needed a reminder that baseball at Coors Field is still baseball at Coors Field, Tuesday night’s 9-7 Tampa Bay victory over the Colorado Rockies provided all the evidence you could possibly need. What should have been a blowout became a slugfest. What looked like a Rays demolition job turned into an 11-inning chess match. And what could have been a catastrophic debut for Liam Hicks instead became the stuff of fairy tales.

Let’s start with Hicks, because honestly, you can’t write this stuff. A new Rays acquisition stepping to the plate in the third inning with the bases loaded, two outs, and everything to prove? Grand slam, baby. That’s right, off the bat in his very first at-bat in a Tampa Bay uniform, Hicks launched one to right field that made Coors Field feel five thousand feet higher than it already is. Five at-bats, two hits, one moon shot, four RBIs. That’s not just a debut. That’s a statement.

But here’s where the smart people in the room need to pump the brakes. Colorado wasn’t about to roll over and play dead at home, despite falling behind 5-1 after Hicks’ moonshot. Mickey Moniak responded with his own three-run blast in the bottom of the third. Willi Castro got in on the action with a two-run shot in the fourth. Suddenly, a 5-1 game looked more like a bar brawl than a baseball game.

Aranda Steps Up When It Matters Most

The Rays kept their cool when they had every reason to panic. Jonathan Aranda, who went 1-for-5 on the night with three RBIs, proved to be the ultimate closer in the top of the ninth when he slapped a single to left field with two outs, scoring both Taylor Walls and Yandy Diaz to knot things up at 7-7. It was the kind of at-bat that separates winners from also-rans, and Aranda delivered like a professional.

Then came the 11th inning. Junior Caminero’s seemingly routine ground ball single to center field proved anything but routine when Yandy Diaz crossed the plate with the go-ahead run. Bryan Baker, brought in for the save opportunity, retired the Rockies in order in the bottom of the inning with two strikeouts to seal the deal.

Pitching Gets the Job Done

Look, we can talk about the bats all day, but Garrett Cleavinger earned the win in just 0.2 innings pitched, and that tells you something about how this game unfolded. Neither bullpen was particularly pretty, but when it counted in the clutch moments, the Rays’ relief corps found a way to get outs when outs mattered. Baker’s clean 11th inning was the dagger.

Nick Frasso took the loss despite pitching just one inning, a victim of circumstance more than anything else. The Rockies scored in bunches, but they couldn’t string together the magic in the late innings when they needed it most. That’s baseball, especially at Coors. Sometimes it’s just about who wants it more down the stretch.

The Rays improved to a better record, the Hicks debut will live in infamy, and Colorado heads back to the drawing board wondering how they let this one slip away at home. On Tuesday at Coors Field, the better team won. Barely.
