Burger Delivers in Clutch as Rangers Edge Mariners in Friday Thriller

The Texas Rangers scraped together just enough offense on Friday night to edge the Seattle Mariners 5-4 at Globe Life Field, a game that proved baseball’s enduring truth: clutch hitting beats everything else. Jake Burger was the difference maker, driving in three runs across two hits to carry his team across the finish line while the Mariners watched a potential comeback fall just short.

Burger’s Bat Proves Decisive

Burger’s performance was the kind of two-out heroics that win games in July. His two-run home run in the fourth inning gave Texas a 3-1 advantage at the time, and his RBI single in the sixth extended that lead further. When you’re in a tight ballgame, you need your designated hitter to come through in big spots, and Burger did exactly that. Three RBIs on four at-bats isn’t flashy, but it’s exactly what Skip Schumaker’s Rangers needed from their middle of the order.

The Mariners’ pitching staff, meanwhile, couldn’t find their footing. Bryce Miller lasted just 5.1 innings, surrendering six hits and five earned runs while striking out nobody. That’s the kind of pedestrian performance that gets you a loss in a one-run game. Seattle’s bullpen did its job after Miller departed, but by then the damage was done. The Rangers had already built enough of a cushion to survive what could have been a complete collapse.

Mariners Battle Back Too Late

To their credit, the Mariners didn’t go quietly. Dominic Canzone‘s two-run double in the fifth inning pulled Seattle within one run and kept hope alive. Cole Young had an excellent night at the plate with three hits in four at-bats, showing flashes of the offensive consistency this team desperately needs. The problem was that individual performances don’t matter when your pitcher can’t get through five innings without surrendering five runs.

Dominic Canzone's two-run double

Texas got the early jump courtesy of Wyatt Langford‘s solo home run in the first inning, and that early lead proved crucial. The Rangers added another run on Jake Burger’s two-run shot in the fourth, then padded their advantage further with an uncharacteristic sac bunt by Nicky Lopez in the sixth that scored a run. It’s the kind of small-ball execution that makes the difference in close games, and the Mariners simply couldn’t match it.

Another Frustrating Loss for Seattle

This loss stings for Seattle because they had opportunities to take control of this game. A lineup that features Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena should be doing more damage against a Rangers pitching staff that wasn’t exactly overpowering. Peyton Gray threw just one inning, and Jacob Latz picked up a save despite allowing a run in his frame. The Rangers won this game on the strength of their lineup’s timely hits, not their pitching dominance.

Condensed Game: SEA@TEX – 7/24/26

The Mariners will need to regroup quickly. Bryce Miller needs to be better, and frankly, so does the entire rotation. You don’t win divisions by allowing five runs in five innings, no matter how potent your offense might be on any given evening. The Rangers escaped on Friday, but Seattle shouldn’t take this lying down.
