Devers Walks It Off as Giants Edge Angels in Tenth Inning Thriller

Rafael Devers did what superstars do on Friday night at Oracle Park, slapping a walk-off single in the tenth inning to give the San Francisco Giants a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. This wasn’t some defensive struggle or pitching duel, folks. This was baseball at its most entertaining, most ridiculous, most utterly compelling: a slugfest where both offenses traded haymakers until the Giants finally landed the last one when it mattered most.

Let’s be clear about what happened here. The Angels had every opportunity to put this game away. They scored first, they answered every Giants punch, and they had a legitimate chance to walk out of San Francisco victorious. Instead, they watched Devers become the hero while they packed their bags empty-handed. That’s a brutal pill to swallow in July.

The Slug Fest Gets Personal

Rafael Devers' two-run homer (21)

Devers set the tone immediately, launching a two-run homer in the first inning that announced to everyone in the ballpark that he came to hit. But the Angels weren’t intimidated. Nolan Schanuel got them on the board with an RBI single, keeping it tight and suggesting this could be a chess match played with power hitters.

Casey Schmitt's three-run home run (21)

It wasn’t. Casey Schmitt crushed a three-run shot in the third to give San Francisco a 5-1 lead, and suddenly it looked like a rout was brewing. The Angels, though, have Mike Trout in their lineup, and that matters. The greatest player in baseball orchestrated a two-run rally in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, and when Vaughn Grissom went deep in the eighth to tie the game at six, the Angels had clawed back from the brink.

This is where the Angels’ fatal flaw revealed itself. Chase Silseth lasted a blink and a half, which means the Angels were chasing from the opening pitch. Caleb Kilian got the win despite barely appearing on the mound, a testament to how this game unfolded in stretches and spurts rather than in any conventional manner.

Devers Delivers When It Matters

Rafael Devers' walk-off hit lifts Giants in extras

By the tenth inning, both teams were exhausted, both bullpens were stretched thin, and both benches were wondering if this game would ever end. That’s precisely when Devers stepped up, Luis Arraez on third after collecting three hits on the night, and delivered the kind of hit that wins games and breaks hearts. Single up the middle. Game over. Giants win.

The Angels made this harder on themselves than necessary. Vaughn Grissom went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and showed some fight, but it wasn’t enough when the Giants’ lineup showed up as a collective force. Devers finished with four hits and four RBIs. Schmitt punched in three. Arraez was a machine with three hits himself.

This was a game neither team deserved to lose because both teams played well enough to win. But that’s baseball. Someone loses every night, and on Friday night, it was the Angels who went home empty despite scoring six runs and having every opportunity to steal a game in enemy territory. Devers and the Giants won’t apologize for taking what they earned in the tenth.
