Royals Stage Seventh-Inning Explosion to Stun Giants in Walk-Off Drama

Sometimes baseball rewards patience, and sometimes it punishes pitching incompetence in the worst possible moment. Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium, the Kansas City Royals delivered a masterclass in the latter, absolutely demolishing San Francisco Giants starter Sam Hentges in a catastrophic seventh inning that will haunt this team all the way back to the West Coast.

The Giants came to Kansas City with what looked like a comfortable lead. Luis Arraez’s sacrifice fly in the sixth put them up 1-0, and the seventh inning started innocuously enough. Jung Hoo Lee’s triple on a line drive to right field brought home Rafael Devers to make it 2-0. Willy Adames followed with a ground-rule double down the left-field line that scored Lee, extending the lead to 3-0. The script was written. Or so everyone thought.

Then Hentges faced Salvador Perez, and the baseball gods punished him for his sins. Perez absolutely crushed a solo home run to center field, trimming the deficit to 3-1 and tying a Royals franchise record with his 14th of the season. The momentum shifted like a Kansas wind. Nick Loftin followed with a line drive single to left that scored Michael Massey, making it 3-2. Still manageable. Still winnable.

But then Lane Thomas stepped to the plate and delivered the dagger, a two-run single on a line drive to right field that scored both Starling Marte and Loftin. Just like that, the Royals had a 5-3 lead, and what was supposed to be a routine Giants victory had evaporated faster than morning dew in July. That’s what happens when you trot out a pitcher with an ERA the size of a run production in the deciding inning.

Lane Thomas' go-ahead two-run single

The Giants didn’t go quietly, of course. Casey Schmitt finally got the home run monkey off his back in the ninth, smashing a solo shot to left field that made it 5-4. But it came too late, with Steven Cruz entering to close things out in what was the relief pitcher’s first career save.

Lugo Does His Job, Hentges Does Not

Seth Lugo was brilliant for the Royals, going seven innings while giving up just three hits and three earned runs, striking out five. That’s professional pitching. That’s how you protect a lead. Meanwhile, Hentges lasted all of one-third of an inning, allowing two hits and two runs with no strikeouts. For a team that’s supposed to be contending, that’s simply unacceptable. You cannot leave your starting pitcher in limbo entering the seventh and expect to survive against a team that knows how to strike.

Perez’s Historic Night

Give Salvador Perez his due. The veteran catcher tied a franchise record with his 14th home run of the season and was the catalyst for the comeback that flipped this game on its head. His two-run night, combined with Thomas’s clutch hitting, showed that the Royals have the offensive firepower to overcome deficits when they’re motivated. The Giants’ pitching staff simply couldn’t answer the bell when it mattered most.

This was a game the Giants should have won. Instead, they’ll spend the next 24 hours wondering how they blew a three-run lead in the span of five batters. That’s baseball at its most merciless and most beautiful.
