Cubs Demolish Tigers in First-Inning Onslaught at Wrigley

If you’re looking for a microcosm of everything that went wrong for Detroit on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field, look no further than the bottom of the first inning. Framber Valdez didn’t record an out. He threw 13 pitches. The Cubs scored six runs before the Tigers could even bat. That’s not baseball, that’s a mugging.

The final score of 11-2 feels almost generous to the Tigers. This was a complete capitulation, a masterclass in how quickly a ballgame can spiral when one team decides to swing aggressively and the other team’s starting pitcher decides to channel his inner batting practice machine.

Cubs score six runs in the 1st inning

What made Tuesday’s debacle particularly damning was the lack of quality contact required. Carson Kelly’s two-run single wasn’t even struck hard, yet it plated two runs. Michael Busch followed with a single of his own. Ian Happ contributed an RBI single on a fly ball to short that should have been trouble. By the time Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki delivered back-to-back walks with the bases loaded, the game was already over. It was an execution disaster of the highest order.

Peterson’s Dominant Performance Puts Game Away Early

Six-run 1st sets tone in Cubs' 11-2 win over Tigers

If Valdez’s implosion was the problem, David Peterson‘s brilliance was the solution. The Cubs’ starter was nigh untouchable, scattering three hits over 6.2 innings while allowing zero earned runs. Peterson struck out four and walked just one, operating with the kind of control and precision that makes hitters look foolish. This wasn’t a close contest once Peterson took the mound.

The Cubs added to their early lead methodically. Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in another run in the third with a single. Michael Conforto‘s two-run homer in the fifth, his ninth of the season, put the game firmly out of reach at 9-0. Alex Bregman’s RBI single in the seventh was merely insurance at that point.

Dillon Dingler's two-run home run (22)

Tigers’ Late Heroics Too Little, Way Too Late

Dillon Dingler provided the only bright spot for Detroit, launching a two-run homer in the ninth that broke up the shutout bid and gave A.J. Hinch’s thoroughly embarrassed squad at least a pair of runs on the scoreboard. But crushed by that point, no one cared. A home run in a game you’re losing 9-0 is just scoreboard decoration.

Condensed Game: DET@CHC – 7/21/26

The Cubs were simply better on every level Tuesday night. Their lineup was aggressive without being reckless. Their pitcher was pristine. Their defense made plays when they needed to. The Tigers showed up unprepared, with Valdez delivering one of the worst first-inning performances you’ll see at the major league level.

This is the kind of loss that sticks with a team. Not because it was close, but because it wasn’t. Wrigleyville knew by the time the first inning ended that this game was over. The Tigers did too. They just had to sit through eight more innings of getting their teeth kicked in. That’s baseball sometimes. On Tuesday night, it was Detroit’s turn to learn that lesson the hard way.
