The Washington Nationals came to Oakland on Sunday and reminded the Athletics exactly why they’re trending upward while Mark Kotsay’s crew continues to languish in mediocrity. A 5-2 victory at Sutter Health Park wasn’t just a win, it was a statement, powered by a Nationals lineup that finally looked like it could actually compete for playoff positioning.

Foster Griffin Masterclass Puts Early Pressure on A’s

Foster Griffin was absolutely magnificent for Washington, twirling 7.0 innings of near-flawless baseball. The kid gave up just one earned run on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts, keeping Oakland’s anemic offense at bay for most of the afternoon. This is what dominant pitching looks like when you face a team that can’t string together consistent offense. Jacob Lopez lasted only 4.1 innings for Oakland, surrendering two runs on two hits with six strikeouts, but the damage was already done by then.

The Nationals struck first in the top of the third when Curtis Mead drove in Nasim Nuñez with a groundout to shortstop. It wasn’t flashy, but it was effective, and that’s the difference between a team that wins ballgames and one that doesn’t. Tyler Soderstrom answered back immediately in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single that scored Alika Williams, proving the A’s at least had a pulse early on.

Harry Ford extended Washington’s lead in the fourth with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Dylan Crews. Ford’s two-bagger was the kind of clutch hit that wins games down the stretch. By this point, the A’s were already looking overmatched.

Back-to-Back Blasts Seal Oakland’s Fate

Then came the dagger in the fifth inning. CJ Abrams, who finished the day 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, launched a two-run shot that put the Nationals up 4-1. The very next pitch, Dylan Crews went deep for a solo blast that made it 5-1. Back-to-back home runs have a way of draining the life out of a ballpark, and you could feel Oakland’s slim hopes evaporating faster than intelligence at a replay review conference.

Credit where it’s due: the Athletics didn’t lay down completely. Soderstrom’s line drive single in the third showed some fight, and Jacob Wilson‘s ninth-inning single that scored Jeff McNeil gave Oakland at least a modicum of dignity on the scoreboard. But it was too little, way too late.

Clayton Beeter came in for the save situation in the ninth and didn’t break a sweat, pitching 1.1 innings with two strikeouts while allowing one earned run. This is a Nationals team that’s starting to look like they have legitimate depth, both at the plate and on the mound.

The A’s have real problems brewing in Oakland, and Sunday’s loss only emphasized how far they are from competitive baseball. Meanwhile, Washington is rolling, and if the bats keep producing like they did on Sunday, they’re going to be a serious problem for contenders down the line.
