Nimmo’s Three RBIs Lead Rangers Past Braves in Truist Park Thriller

The Texas Rangers came to Atlanta on Saturday and did what good road teams do: they won a game they had no business winning. A 7-6 victory over the Braves at Truist Park wasn’t pretty, wasn’t dominant, and certainly wasn’t stress-free, but it was exactly the kind of win that separates playoff contenders from also-rans in July.

Brandon Nimmo was the story of this one, and rightfully so. The guy went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, and every single one of those ribbies mattered. Nimmo’s two-run single in the sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie and proved to be the difference in a game where both teams threw haymakers all afternoon. This wasn’t some fifth-inning insurance run. This was the dagger, delivered exactly when the Rangers needed it most.

Brandon Nimmo's two-run single

Let’s talk about what could have gone wrong here. MacKenzie Gore lasted just 5.2 innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs while striking out seven. That’s a mediocre line by any definition. The Braves jumped on him early, scoring five runs in the second inning alone thanks to some sloppy Rangers defense and timely hitting from Eli White (two-run homer) and Drake Baldwin (RBI single). Gore looked beatable, looked vulnerable, and looked like a guy who might blow this game wide open for Atlanta.

But here’s where the Rangers’ depth showed up. Tyler Kinley, the Braves’ relief pitcher, was absolutely brutal when it mattered most. The guy came into the sixth with Atlanta down by just one run and immediately allowed a two-run homer to Evan Carter. That’s professional malpractice. You don’t give up a two-run shot in that situation and expect to keep your job in the save column. Carter’s blast made it 6-4 Rangers, and Nimmo’s subsequent two-run single turned it into a 7-4 advantage that would hold up despite Mauricio Dubon’s RBI double in the seventh cutting it to 7-6.

The Braves had chances. Michael Harris II, their sparkplug, went 2-for-5 with a solo homer in the third. The team showed fight, scratched and clawed their way back into this game multiple times. But here’s the problem with allowing six runs in the first three innings: you’re basically asking the rest of your offense to bail you out, and that’s a losing bet more often than not.

Gore Escapes, Latz Closes

Jacob Latz came in for the save with the bases empty in the ninth and shut the door with authority, striking out one in 1.1 scoreless innings. It wasn’t overly dramatic, but it was professional. The Rangers got exactly what they needed: a closer who understood the assignment and executed.

Takeaways

The Rangers proved they can win ugly on the road. Joc Pederson‘s leadoff homer set an early tone, and even when Atlanta fought back aggressively, Texas refused to fold. That’s the hallmark of a team with postseason aspirations. The Braves, meanwhile, wasted another strong performance from Harris II and proved once again that inconsistent relief pitching will eventually cost you games in close situations. Tyler Kinley’s collapse was unacceptable, and Skip Schumaker will be asking hard questions about his pitching staff moving forward.

Texas leaves Atlanta with a crucial win. That’s how you build a contender in July.
