Red Sox Bash Past Mets Behind Gray’s Gem and Late Fireworks

The Boston Red Sox came to Queens on Friday night and reminded the Mets exactly why you don’t let early opportunities slip away. Behind a masterful performance from Sonny Gray and timely power from their offense, Boston rolled to a convincing 6-2 victory at Citi Field, handing New York another disappointing loss in what’s shaping up to be a forgettable season for the home team.

Boston struck first and struck hard, with Masataka Yoshida doubling down the line in the first inning to plate two runs immediately. That’s the kind of aggressive, no-nonsense baseball that wins games. The Red Sox weren’t interested in feeling out Nolan McLean, they came out swinging, and it set the tone for everything that followed.

Gray Dominates, Mets Can’t Catch Up

Sonny Gray tosses six innings of one-run ball in win

Sonny Gray was absolutely brilliant, scattering five hits across six innings while allowing just one run. The man pitched like someone who remembered what it means to be a true professional on the mound. McLean actually struck out seven batters and pitched well enough to win most games, but in baseball, you have to score runs, and the Mets simply couldn’t manufacture enough offense against a focused Boston team.

Anthony Seigler's two-run homer (2)

The real daggers came late. Anthony Seigler crushed a two-run homer in the seventh inning that should have put this game away for good. Then Wilyer Abreu, who was absolutely outstanding at the plate, added his own two-run shot in the ninth to put a bow on what turned into a blowout. This wasn’t some nail-biter where the Mets made a valiant comeback. This was the Red Sox taking control early and never looking back.

Wilyer Abreu two-run homer (11)

Brett Baty’s solo homer in the bottom of the ninth was nothing more than garbage time offense, a consolation prize for a Mets team that simply got outplayed. Sure, Juan Soto drove in a run with a sacrifice fly earlier in the game, but when you’re down four runs in the ninth inning, that’s hardly worth celebrating.

The Bigger Picture

Brett Baty's solo homer (4)

What struck me most about this game was how efficiently Boston executed. No wasted at-bats, no mental lapses. Yoshida, Seigler, and Abreu combined for six hits and seven RBIs. That’s championship-caliber baseball right there. The Red Sox came into an unfriendly environment and took care of business against a team that’s supposed to compete in this division.

Nolan McLean fans seven

For the Mets, this loss stings because McLean actually pitched well. He deserved better run support. But that’s baseball, and that’s also the reality of this New York roster right now. When your offense can only generate two runs against competent pitching, you’re going to lose ballgames. Lots of them.

Greg Weissert secures Red Sox's 6-2 win

Boston’s bullpen, anchored by Greg Weissert down the stretch, was tidy and efficient. No dramatics, no heroics needed, just solid baseball from top to bottom. That’s how contenders play. On Friday night at Citi Field, the Red Sox showed they’re ready for meaningful baseball in September, while the Mets continue to circle the drain.
