Dodgers Edge Rockies in Thriller Behind Betts’ Late Heroics

Sometimes a game tells you everything you need to know about two teams heading in opposite directions. The Los Angeles Dodgers scraped out a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium, and while the margin was thin, the message was unmistakable: this Dodgers team knows how to win when it matters.

Let’s be honest, this wasn’t exactly a clinic in baseball excellence. Antonio Senzatela‘s performance for Colorado was downright catastrophic, lasting just one inning and allowing three earned runs on three hits before getting pulled. That’s the kind of stuff that loses pennants and sours fan bases. The Rockies deserved better than that collapse right out of the gate, but in baseball, you don’t get participation trophies for effort.

Kyle Tucker's two-run single

Kyle Tucker’s two-run single in the bottom of the first set the tone early, scoring both Freeman and Betts to give Los Angeles an immediate advantage. It was efficient, it was professional, and it was exactly the kind of start contenders need. The Dodgers didn’t need to do much else after that, which speaks volumes about their pitching and their ability to protect leads.

Colorado Fights Back, But Can’t Close It Out

Credit the Rockies for showing some fight. Kyle Karros blasted a solo home run in the second inning, and Edouard Julien followed up with one of his own. Suddenly, this was a one-run ballgame, and you could sense the momentum shifting toward Colorado. A Mickey Moniak sacrifice fly in the third made it a 3-3 tie, and the Rockies had clawed their way right back into it.

But here’s where the Rockies’ youth and inexperience showed. They had their moment. They had the momentum. They had every chance to put this game away and leave Los Angeles with a statement victory. Instead, they let it slip away.

Betts Delivers When It Counts

In the eighth inning, when the game was hanging in the balance, Mookie Betts did what superstars do. He stepped up and delivered a go-ahead single that proved to be the difference. Tommy Edman scored on the play, giving the Dodgers their fourth run and, ultimately, the win.

Edgardo Henriquez got the win despite pitching just 0.1 innings, which tells you the game was decided by the bats and the bullpen depth, not dominant starting pitching. Tanner Scott earned the save with a clean inning of relief, shutting the door when it mattered most.

Mookie Betts' go-ahead single

This is the difference between a team positioned for October baseball and one that’s still searching for consistency. The Dodgers have the clutch gene. The Rockies, frankly, don’t. Karros and Julien proved they can hit on Wednesday, but homers and brave efforts don’t mean anything if you can’t finish opponents when they’re vulnerable.

Los Angeles showed why they’re built to win in the National League West, even if the performance wasn’t always pretty. Sometimes baseball is about making plays when the spotlights brighten, and on Wednesday night, the Dodgers did exactly that.
