Ryan Dominates as Twins Dismantle Yankees 6-1 in the Bronx

Joe Ryan didn’t just beat the Yankees on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. He dismantled them, methodically erasing any hope the home team had of mounting a comeback in what turned into a complete mismatch between two American League contenders. The Minnesota Twins walked out of the Bronx with a decisive 6-1 victory, and frankly, it wasn’t even that close.

Ryan was absolutely untouchable for seven innings, surrendering just three hits and zero runs while fanning nine Yankees batters. No walks either, just pure command and precision. This is the kind of pitching performance that defines seasons and playoffs. When your starter locks in like that, your entire team’s confidence skyrockets. Ryan Weathers, meanwhile, lasted just four innings for New York, surrendering six hits and four runs before getting lifted. The disparity was staggering.

The Twins struck first and often, which is how good baseball teams operate. Josh Bell’s fly ball single to right in the top of the first plated Austin Martin to make it 1-0 Minnesota before the Yankees even stepped into the box. That early deficit seemed to rattle New York’s entire approach at the plate.

Minnesota kept chipping away. Brooks Lee went 3-for-5 with an RBI, driving in Royce Lewis with a line drive single in the fourth. Lewis himself went yard with a two-run single in the fifth that proved to be the back-breaker, making it 4-0 Twins. By that point, the game was over. The Yankees weren’t going to overcome a four-run deficit against Ryan’s arm, and they didn’t even put up a serious fight trying.

Austin Martin’s bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning brought home another run, and Kody Clemens’ sac fly made it 6-0. The Twins were virtually taking batting practice by that stage of the game. The Yankees finally scraped together a run on Jasson Domínguez’s RBI fielder’s choice, but that was window dressing on an embarrassing performance. One run. That’s all the Bronx Bombers could muster against a Twins team that came in and simply played better baseball.

The ABS Technology Circus

What needs to be discussed here is the elephant in the room: the automated ball-strike system that apparently had more issues Sunday than a startup company on launch day. Multiple challenges resulted in reversals. Strikes were overturned to balls. Balls were overturned to strikes. The whole thing felt like a traveling circus act that undermined the legitimacy of the competition. Yes, technology is supposed to improve accuracy, but when we’re watching it consistently second-guess itself throughout nine innings, we’ve got a serious problem. Baseball’s integrity cannot depend on a system that changes its mind this frequently.

The Injury Avalanche

Both teams left Yankee Stadium Sunday with injuries that could loom large down the stretch. Byron Buxton exited early with a hip injury for Minnesota. For New York, Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s apparent injury departure is concerning for a roster that cannot afford to lose productive position players. These battles aren’t just played on the field.

When it’s all said and done, this game belonged entirely to the Twins. They showed up, executed, and proved why they’re contenders. The Yankees showed up and played baseball. There’s a significant difference between those two things.
