Pirates Dismantle Nationals Behind Ashcraft’s Dominant Pitching

There are games that tell you everything you need to know about a baseball team in three innings, and Saturday’s Pirates demolition of the Nationals at Nationals Park was precisely that kind of statement. Pittsburgh walked into Washington’s house on Independence Day and essentially ended the game before most fans had finished their first hot dog. The Pirates won 7-1, and it wasn’t even remotely close.

The carnage began immediately. James Wood gave the Nationals hope with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, a 428-foot missile that suggested maybe, just maybe, this could be a game. Hope is a wonderful thing. It lasted approximately 47 minutes.

Once the Pirates got their first crack at Carson Palmquist in the top of the second inning, it became apparent that Washington’s starting pitcher had woken up on the wrong side of the Potomac. Palmquist lasted exactly one inning, surrendering four earned runs on four hits while recording three strikeouts. That’s not a pitching line. That’s a crime scene. The Pirates pieced together a masterclass in small-ball aggression: Nick Gonzales singled to drive in a run, then Brandon Lowe followed with a two-run single that made it 3-1. Esmerlyn Valdez added another RBI single for good measure. Just like that, the game’s trajectory had fundamentally altered.

Ashcraft’s Shutdown Performance

While the Pirates’ bats were doing the heavy lifting, Braxton Ashcraft was equally impressive from the mound. The Pirates’ starter surrendered just one run on six hits over 5 and 2/3 innings, striking out seven batters and walking only two. He wasn’t overpowering everyone, but he was efficient, locating fastballs and breaking balls exactly where he needed them. When trouble threatened, Ashcraft escaped with a double play that could have defined lesser pitchers’ outings. This was a complete effort from a pitcher who clearly understood the assignment.

Washington’s Fourth of July Fireworks Fizzle

The Nationals looked lifeless after that first inning bomb by Wood. The fact that they managed only one run against Pittsburgh’s pitching staff was less a testament to their offense and more an indictment of their inability to execute in critical moments. Beyond Wood’s solo shot, Washington had no answers. Their relief pitching was serviceable enough, but by that point, Pittsburgh had already constructed an insurmountable lead through a combination of solid hitting and opportunistic base running.

The Pirates tacked on insurance runs in the eighth inning when Nick Gonzales singled home Bryan Reynolds, and then Henry Davis drew a bases-loaded walk to score another. These were the kinds of runs that separate convincing wins from blowouts, and Pittsburgh made sure there was absolutely no doubt about the outcome.

Henry Davis' RBI walk

On a Saturday celebrating American independence, the Pirates declared their own freedom from a struggling streak with a masterful, dominant performance. Ashcraft was exceptional, the lineup was clinical, and the Nationals were simply outmatched in every conceivable way. Sometimes baseball really is that simple.
