McCarthy’s 6 RBIs Power Rockies Past Hapless Giants in Coors Blowout

Friday night at Coors Field was a masterclass in offensive dominance, and unfortunately for the San Francisco Giants, they were the ones getting dominated. The Colorado Rockies dismantled Logan Webb and company in a 15-3 laugher that wasn’t even close to being competitive after the third inning. This wasn’t baseball. This was batting practice with umpires in place.

Let’s talk about Jake McCarthy, because the man put on a show that had nothing to do with the holiday fireworks scheduled for later in the evening. McCarthy went 4-for-5 with two homers and six RBIs, including a grand slam in the fifth inning that essentially ended whatever slim hopes the Giants harbored of making this game respectable. He led off the game with a solo shot in the bottom of the first, then returned in the fifth to go yard again with the bases loaded. That’s not a coincidence. That’s a player in complete rhythm against a visiting pitching staff that looked absolutely lost.

Webb was atrocious. Three innings, eleven hits, seven earned runs, and only two strikeouts. For a pitcher of his pedigree, this was embarrassing. The Rockies clearly had him figured out from pitch one, and the Giants’ front office had to be wondering what they were going to get from their ace down the stretch if he’s serving up meatballs like he was auditioning for a slow-pitch softball league.

The Fifth Inning Collapse

The fifth inning is where this game got completely out of hand. The Rockies scored seven runs on the back of McCarthy’s grand slam and Cole Carrigg‘s RBI triple. That’s not a rally. That’s a full-scale offensive assault. Ezequiel Tovar had already gone deep earlier with a two-run shot in the second, and by the time the fifth rolled around, the Giants were essentially playing out the string.

Rafael Devers hit a solo home run for San Francisco in the sixth, a reminder that the Giants did have some semblance of an offensive pulse, but it was far too little, far too late. Casey Schmitt drove in Luis Arraez with a single in the third, and Bryce Eldridge added an RBI single in the fourth, but these were merely consolation prizes in what turned into a complete rout.

Solid Pitching Performance Wasted

On the flip side, Ryan Feltner was excellent for Colorado, spinning six innings of two-run ball while striking out nine. He kept the Giants’ offense off-balance and in check whenever they showed signs of life. Gabriel Hughes came in for a clean save opportunity in the eighth and ninth, recording his first career save and making his major league debut count.

This was the kind of game that gets highlighted during playoff preview reels, but not for the reason the Giants wanted. Webb’s meltdown, the Rockies’ disciplined hitting approach, and the absence of any defensive mishaps that might’ve slowed Colorado’s momentum all pointed to a team that came ready to play on Friday night. The Giants came ready to go home early.

Nothing about this performance suggested San Francisco will be a contender down the stretch. Nothing about it suggested Webb is the ace they need in October. Colorado, meanwhile, showed they can punish mistakes and put away inferior opponents when they’re clicking. On this Friday night in the Mile High City, they were very much clicking.
