Guardians bludgeon Gore early, hold off Rangers rally for 9-4 win

MacKenzie Gore came into this matchup with legitimate Cy Young credentials, but he ran directly into a meat grinder wearing Cleveland uniforms. The left-hander allowed seven hits and five earned runs over five innings while striking out seven, which sounds respectable until you realize how badly that second frame went sideways. A sacrifice bunt from Austin Hedges got things started before David Fry, that underrated son of a gun, launched a three-run missile to right-center field that made it 4-0 faster than you could say “Rangers offense.” That’s the kind of early dagger that makes comebacks feel distant and hypothetical.

Joey Cantillo matched Gore’s five-inning workload for Cleveland and actually looked sharper doing it, allowing just three hits across five frames with a modest 5-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Yes, he walked five batters, which isn’t exactly vintage control, but somehow he navigated through Texas’s lineup without permitting catastrophic damage. That’s good enough to earn the W when your offense is putting up nine runs, and Cantillo will take it to the bank.

Rangers refuse to surrender completely

To Texas’s credit, they didn’t play dead once down 5-0. The Rangers scratched back with two runs in the third inning courtesy of a Kyle Higashioka walk that followed an ABS challenge, then added two more in the sixth via an Elias Diaz groundout and Nicky Lopez double. Diaz also smacked a solo shot in the eighth to keep the Rangers honest, but by then the game’s outcome felt predetermined. Sometimes you’re simply outmaneuvered, and Wednesday was one of those nights for Skip Schumaker’s crew.

Hedges steals the show defensively and offensively

Austin Hedges deserves special mention here because the man was everywhere. Beyond that pivotal sacrifice bunt in the second, Hedges launched a two-run homer in the eighth inning to extend Cleveland’s advantage. Three RBIs from the catcher slot is the kind of production that changes games, and Hedges delivered when it mattered most. Chase DeLauter contributed three hits including an RBI single in the seventh, while Ezequiel Duran went 3-for-5 to pace the Rangers’ limited offensive success.

This was vintage early-season baseball theater: one team catching fire at exactly the right moment, another team unable to recover. The Guardians’ second-inning explosion was the difference-maker, plain and simple. Cleveland’s pitching kept Texas at arm’s length just well enough, and when you score five runs before the third inning even begins, you don’t need a masterpiece. You just need competence.

For the Rangers, this loss stings because they had quality at-bats later but couldn’t manufacture anything approaching a rally when it counted. That’s baseball sometimes, especially when you dig yourself a five-run hole before most people have even sat down in their seats.
