Cubs outlast Padres in offensive showcase as Swanson, Bregman go deep

There’s a special kind of baseball that gets played on a warm June evening at Wrigley Field, the kind where the ivy on the walls seems almost secondary to the parade of baseballs launching into the Chicago sky. On Tuesday night, the Padres and Cubs treated the Friendly Confines to exactly that, a slugfest that ultimately favored the home team in a 9-7 Cubs victory that was decided by pure offensive firepower and just enough pitching competence.

This game was never going to be decided by defensive gems or pitcher’s duels. Fernando Tatis Jr. announced his intentions early, smacking a solo shot in the first inning to give San Diego a 1-0 lead. But the Cubs responded immediately with their own power display. Dansby Swanson‘s solo blast in the second inning started what would become a relentless barrage, followed immediately by Alex Bregman‘s three-run bomb that put Chicago up 4-1 before the second inning was complete.

The Padres refused to go quietly. Manny Machado, that ever-reliable run-producer, cracked a two-run home run in the third to make it 4-3. But this was the Cubs’ night. Michael Busch extended the lead with a solo shot in the fifth, and Swanson added his second homer in the same inning, this time with Ian Happ aboard. Pete Crow-Armstrong added his own solo blast in the sixth, and suddenly the Cubs had assembled five home runs, a season-first achievement that would prove decisive.

The Padres made one last legitimate push in the eighth inning. Gavin Sheets, getting meaningful at-bats in the late innings, absolutely crushed a three-run blast off the Cubs bullpen to cut the deficit to just one run at 9-7. Tatis followed with his second home run of the night, but by then it was too little, too late. The Cubs had the breathing room they needed.

Boyd’s grit prevails over Sears’ struggles

Matthew Boyd earned the win despite not being overly dominant, navigating five innings while allowing eight hits and three runs. He made his pitches work when it mattered. JP Sears, saddled with the loss, couldn’t survive the second inning barrage and exited after just 4.2 innings, having surrendered six earned runs on eight hits. Ryan Rolison closed the deal with a pristine save, needing just 0.1 innings of clean baseball.

The statistical reality of this game is almost absurd. Nine home runs were hit in total, with the Cubs out-slugging the Padres 5-4 in the long ball department. Swanson’s two-homer game and Bregman’s three-RBI night were the difference makers. The Padres, despite getting multi-homer performances from Tatis and strong showings from Machado and Sheets, simply couldn’t overcome the Cubs’ balanced offensive attack.

An entertaining, if occasionally ugly, victory

Cubs manager Craig Counsell didn’t need a complex game plan Tuesday night. When five of your opponents’ runs come via the home run and you can muster five of your own, sometimes the math takes care of itself. It wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing baseball, but on a warm evening in Chicago, it was exactly the kind of entertaining display that fills the bleachers and keeps fans coming back.

The Padres will rue this one, knowing they had their moments and came close. But close doesn’t cut it when you’re facing a Cubs lineup that decides to turn Wrigley Field into a launching pad.
