D-backs Edge Giants in Slugfest, Perdomo’s Double Proves Difference

The Arizona Diamondbacks survived a late-inning Giants rally to secure a 5-4 victory on Monday at Chase Field, in a game that featured enough momentum swings to give both fan bases legitimate reasons to feel robbed. This wasn’t pretty. This was messy, back-and-forth baseball where one team made slightly fewer mistakes down the stretch, and that team happened to be wearing the D-backs uniform.

Tyler Mahle’s collapse in the fifth inning essentially decided this contest. The Giants hurler couldn’t find the zone, walking three batters and surrendering four earned runs in just 4.1 innings before getting pulled. Geraldo Perdomo, the unlikely hero, laced a sharp line drive double into left field that cleared the bases and sent three runners across the plate. That double, coming off a Giants pitcher who looked thoroughly discombobulated, proved to be the knife that the Diamondbacks twisted just deeply enough to survive.

Eduardo Rodriguez was absolutely magnificent for Arizona, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings (well, one earned run, but let’s not quibble) while walking nobody. The man was a maestro, a complete antithesis to Mahle’s wildness. Rodriguez threw strikes, trusted his stuff, and gave the D-backs’ bullpen a fresh, well-rested look heading into the final stretch. This is the kind of dominant starting pitching that wins baseball games in late June, and Rodriguez delivered in spades.

The Giants Refused to Die

Credit the Giants for clawing back. Down 5-1 after Nolan Arenado‘s solo shot in the sixth, San Francisco refused to quit. Heliot Ramos blasted a solo homer in the ninth to cut it to 5-3, and suddenly there was genuine drama. Drew Cavanaugh followed with an RBI single that made it 5-4, and suddenly the Diamondbacks’ comfortable lead evaporated into thin air. This is where Paul Sewald earned his save, stranding runners on the corners and getting out of a genuinely tense situation.

Sewald pitched one inning of pure cardiac baseball, surrendering three hits but no more runs. Not the prettiest save, but baseball doesn’t care about aesthetics. It cares about results, and Sewald got them.

A Victory Built on Timely Hitting

Ketel Marte got things rolling with a leadoff home run that set an aggressive tone early. Nolan Arenado went 2-for-2 with a homer, continuing his torrid stretch. But it was Perdomo who delivered the dagger, going 1-for-3 with three RBIs on that devastating double. Sometimes baseball rewards the players who come through in the biggest moments, and that was Perdomo on Monday night.

The Giants shouldn’t hang their heads. They fought back valiantly against a team that executed better down the stretch. But execution is everything in baseball, and Arizona simply made one more crucial play when it mattered most. This was a game both teams had chances to win, and the Diamondbacks capitalized on theirs. That’s all that separates winners from losers in June.
