Mize Dominates with 10 K’s as Tigers Stun Yankees 7-3 at Stadium

There are nights when a visiting team walks into one of baseball’s most intimidating cathedrals and simply outplays the home team in every conceivable way. Monday night at Yankee Stadium was one of those nights. The Detroit Tigers, no longer the pushover franchise of years past, came to the Bronx and handed the Yankees a 7-3 defeat behind a pitching performance for the ages and timely offensive execution that made Ryan Weathers look utterly helpless on the mound.

Let’s start with Casey Mize, because frankly, everything else pales in comparison. The Tigers’ ace was nothing short of spectacular, scattering just one hit across seven scoreless innings while striking out 10 batters. One hit. In seven innings. Against a Yankees lineup that’s supposed to be dangerous. Mize was locked in from the opening pitch, and the Bronx Bombers never recovered. This wasn’t lucky baseball or marginal stuff working on a particular evening. This was domination, pure and simple. When you’re fanning 10 hitters and allowing a single base hit, you’re not just pitching well, you’re performing at an elite level.

The Tigers’ offense, meanwhile, came out swinging with a purpose that suggested they had no intention of letting this one slip away. Detroit struck quickly in the first when Spencer Torkelson’s ground ball single brought home Dillon Dingler. Then came the second inning, and that’s when the real damage happened. The Tigers manufactured four runs in a span that exposed exactly how unprepared Weathers was for the moment. It started with Zach McKinstry scoring on an error by José Caballero, then Dingler’s sacrifice fly made it 2-0. Hao-Yu Lee’s two-run single capped the inning at 4-0, and the Yankees were already staring down a mountain they couldn’t climb.

Weathers’ Implosion Sets Tone Early

Ryan Weathers lasted just 1.2 innings. Let that sink in for a moment. The starting pitcher for the Yankees, on his own field, couldn’t even make it through two full innings. Seven hits and two earned runs will do that, but the real issue was that the Tigers found their timing immediately and exploited every weakness Weathers offered. This wasn’t a matter of Detroit getting lucky. This was the Yankees’ starter being thoroughly outmatched.

The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth when Kevin McGonigle‘s line drive single scored both Vierling and Dingler. At 6-0, the outcome was essentially determined. The Yankees didn’t make their only real statement until the eighth inning when Amed Rosario cracked a three-run home run to make things at least moderately respectable on the scoreboard. But three runs in the eighth inning doesn’t erase what happened over the previous seven innings.

Hinch Gets His Moment

A.J. Hinch, the Tigers’ manager, notched his 1,000th career win on Monday night. Not bad for a guy who’s had to rebuild a franchise from the ground up. This victory, in this fashion, against this opponent, represents exactly what Hinch is trying to accomplish in Detroit: competing and winning against baseball’s traditional powers without apology or hesitation. The Yankees were favored, the Yankees were home, and the Yankees were thoroughly outplayed. That’s the kind of win that builds winning cultures.

The Tigers leave New York having accomplished their mission in decisive fashion. The Yankees, meanwhile, head back to the drawing board wondering how their ace starter completely folded and how an opposing pitcher could dissect their lineup so easily.
