Nationals Edge Orioles in 10th as García Jr. Shines at Camden Yards

The Washington Nationals stole one from the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, escaping with a 4-3 victory in 10 innings that felt like a theft in the best possible way. In a game that showcased competence from both sides and the occasional flash of brilliance, it was the Nationals who had the last laugh, thanks largely to the exceptional performance of Luis García Jr. and the timely heroics of Daylen Lile in extra innings.

García Jr. was nothing short of spectacular, going 4-for-5 with a solo homer in the fifth inning that gave Washington a 2-1 cushion at the time. That 114 mph blast off the bat demonstrated the kind of raw power that can carry a team in tight contests. The guy looked locked in from the first pitch, and the Orioles’ pitching staff had no answer for him all afternoon.

The Nationals Strike Early, Then Hold On for Dear Life

Washington grabbed the early advantage thanks to Jorbit Vivas‘ RBI single in the second inning, plating Daylen Lile. It wasn’t flashy, but it set the tone. The Nationals would add another run in the sixth when Drew Millas singled home Vivas, extending the lead to 3-1. For most of this game, that seemed like it would be enough. But in baseball, seems don’t matter when the final out hasn’t been recorded.

The Orioles clawed back with a run of their own in the second courtesy of Chadwick Tromp’s RBI single, but they couldn’t get anything else going until the eighth inning, when Pete Alonso smashed a double and Samuel Basallo followed with an RBI single that knotted the game at 3-3. Just like that, what looked like a Nationals runaway had become a heavyweight bout.

Lile Finishes It When It Matters Most

Extra baseball was needed, and in the tenth inning, Daylen Lile delivered the dagger with a go-ahead single that plated Dylan Crews. Justin Lawrence came in to shut the door in the bottom of the tenth, earning the save despite allowing a walk. It wasn’t pretty from the bullpen perspective, but the Nationals got the job done.

Clayton Beeter got the win in what amounted to a mop-up appearance, while Ryan Helsley took the loss for Baltimore. Those are the kinds of decisions that feel hollow when discussing a game this competitive, but they’re the rules of engagement.

This was a game that neither team deserved to lose, but somebody had to. The Nationals’ offense, led by García Jr. and Vivas who contributed three hits, was just marginally more efficient when it mattered. The Orioles fought back with some late-game heroics courtesy of Alonso and Basallo, but they came up one swing short in a contest that could have gone either way in the tenth.

Saturday’s result is the kind that sticks with losing teams. Baltimore had every opportunity to put this one away and didn’t. Washington, meanwhile, got a master class in patience and execution from García Jr., and they’ll gladly take a road victory in extra innings any day of the week.
