Arozarena’s Late Heroics Not Enough as Guardians Hold On

And that’s exactly what they did, piece by piece, with Cooper Ingle‘s first career hit driving in two crucial runs in the fourth. This is what good baseball looks like: pitching depth, timely hitting, and the ability to cash in on your opportunities.

The Guardians struck early and often in the bottom of the fourth, when Kahlil Watson’s double scored Bazzana before Ingle’s ground single drove in two more. Brayan Rocchio added another run on a double in the fifth, and suddenly Cleveland had daylight. It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t dominant. But it was effective, which is all that matters in September baseball.

Arozarena’s Outburst Comes Too Late

Enter Randy Arozarena, who finally woke Seattle’s dormant bats in the eighth with a three-run bomb that made this game interesting again. This is the player the Mariners acquired to be a difference-maker, and for one swing, he absolutely was. Three RBIs on one blast, putting Seattle within one and suddenly making every pitch matter.

But Cade Smith and the Cleveland bullpen didn’t blink. Smith earned his 25th save, shutting the door on Seattle’s hopes with a scoreless ninth. The Mariners couldn’t get that crucial ninth-inning rally going, left to wonder what might have been had they shown some offensive urgency before the eighth.

The Verdict

This was a game Seattle could easily have won with better lineup management and more aggressive at-bats earlier in the contest. Instead, they watched a middle-of-the-order Guardians team manufacture runs and lean on superior pitching to steal a Saturday night win. Gilbert was outstanding and deserved better. The bullpen held up their end. But the bats went silent, and in baseball, that’s an unforgivable sin against quality opposing pitching. Cleveland’s methodical, efficient approach proved superior to Seattle’s feast-or-famine strategy. That’s the difference between a winning team and a team that wins despite itself.
