Goldschmidt’s two-homer night powers Yankees past Tigers

Paul Goldschmidt reminded Detroit why he’s one of baseball’s most feared hitters on Wednesday night, launching two home runs to power the New York Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Tigers at Comerica Park. This wasn’t some lucky night where a slugger gets ahead in the count and cashes in. This was vintage Goldschmidt, punishing mistakes with the kind of ruthless efficiency that has defined his Hall of Fame trajectory.

Goldschmidt’s Onslaught Sets the Tone

Paul Goldschmidt's leadoff home run (13)

The leadoff home run in the first inning was a statement. Goldschmidt went deep on a fly ball to left field, immediately putting the Tigers in a hole against a Yankees team that doesn’t need much help scoring runs. It got worse in the third inning when he struck again, this time crushing a solo shot to left center for his 14th home run of the season. Two at-bats, two home runs, two runs driven in. Game essentially decided right there.

What makes Goldschmidt’s performance particularly damning for Tarik Skubal is that it wasn’t like the Tigers’ ace was throwing batting practice. Skubal struck out nine Yankees over six innings, a reminder that he still possesses the stuff to be a frontline starter. But there’s a difference between missing bats and preventing damage, and on this Wednesday night, Skubal failed at the latter. You simply cannot give Goldschmidt two pitches to hit hard in the same game and expect to leave Comerica Park with a win.

Yankees’ Bullpen Slams the Door

Goldschmidt, Domínguez power Yankees to a 4-2 win

Ryan Weathers was brilliant for New York, allowing just one earned run over six innings while striking out six. That’s the kind of start that wins ballgames in June, when every win matters in the standings. Detroit clawed back with runs in the second and fourth innings, with Spencer Torkelson scoring twice to keep things respectable. Zach McKinstry’s RBI single in the second and Ben Malgeri’s sacrifice fly in the fourth showed the Tigers weren’t going to roll over, even as Goldschmidt was doing his demolition work.

But the Yankees had one more layer to their advantage: Jasson Dominguez. The young star added a two-run home run in the sixth inning that proved to be the dagger, extending the lead to 4-2 and effectively ending any hope Detroit harbored of a comeback. David Bednar came in for a clean save, striking out one in a scoreless ninth, putting a period on a dominant performance.

The reality for Detroit fans heading out of Comerica Park on Wednesday night is uncomfortable: this wasn’t a case of a bad team losing. The Tigers were competitive, Skubal pitched well, and their hitters put runners in scoring position. But the Yankees have the kind of firepower that punishes mistakes, and when Goldschmidt is locked in like this, there’s not much any pitching staff can do about it. Sometimes in baseball, the better team simply wins, and on this night, it was abundantly clear which squad was superior. The Yankees are built for October, and performances like this are exactly why.
