Angels Walk Off in 10th as Orioles’ Basallo Goes Deep Twice

Sometimes baseball rewards the team that refuses to quit, and sometimes it punishes the team that should have closed the deal when they had the chance. Wednesday night at Angel Stadium, the Baltimore Orioles learned both lessons in a 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Los Angeles Angels that will sting for days.

This was a game the Orioles absolutely should have won. Samuel Basallo‘s two-home run performance, combined with Pete Alonso‘s relentless hitting (3-for-4 with 2 RBIs), gave Baltimore a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Orioles had all the momentum, all the firepower, and all the reasons to believe they’d waltz out of Southern California with a victory.

Collapse Down the Stretch

The Angels’ eighth-inning rally started innocuously enough with Vaughn Grissom’s RBI single, then Wade Meckler delivered the gut-punch, a two-run single that suddenly tied the game at 6-6 and sent the crowd into delirium. It was classic baseball heartbreak, the kind that makes you question every decision made in the preceding hours.

Wade Meckler's game-tying two-run single

Keegan Akin deserved better. The Baltimore starter pitched decently, but the bullpen collapse was inexcusable. When you’re nursing a two-run lead with six outs to go, you cannot allow your opponent to tie the game. Period.

The Orioles got their chance at redemption in the 10th when Pete Alonso lined a single to right field, scoring Taylor Ward and giving Baltimore a 7-6 lead. Surely that was it. Surely the Orioles would finally close this thing out.

Nope.

Chase Silseth Steals the Show

Chase Silseth pitched just 1.0 inning with two hits allowed and one earned run, but he picked up the win because baseball rewards the last team to score and punishes the team that couldn’t hold on. Silseth’s reward was undeserved, but that’s how the game works sometimes. Logan O’Hoppe, meanwhile, became an instant Angel legend by slapping a soft ground ball to catcher Samuel Basallo and reaching first base as Nolan Schanuel raced home with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

Logan O'Hoppe's walk-off single

It was a fitting conclusion to a game that spiraled into chaos. The scoring sequences in extra innings were convoluted, involving throwing errors and hurried decisions. This wasn’t the Angels playing championship baseball. This was them getting a break they didn’t earn and capitalizing on it with the desperation of a team fighting for relevance.

Basallo was magnificent for Baltimore, collecting 5 at-bats, 2 hits, and 2 home runs for 4 RBIs. His first career multi-homer game should have been the story everyone talked about Wednesday night. Instead, it’s a footnote to another frustrating loss.

The Orioles had Jorge Soler‘s two-run bomb in the first and several opportunities to put this game away. They didn’t, and now they’re heading home with a loss that will haunt them. That’s not bad luck. That’s execution, and the Orioles came up short when it mattered most.
