D-backs Stun Cardinals in Ninth: Arenado, Gurriel Jr. Deliver Late Heroics

There’s nothing quite like watching a game slip through your fingers in the ninth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals got a masterclass in that particular brand of heartbreak on Tuesday night. The Arizona Diamondbacks stormed back with three runs in the top of the ninth to steal a 4-3 victory from the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, turning what should have been a comfortable evening into a complete meltdown.

Let’s be honest here: this game was decided by one catastrophic decision by the Cardinals’ bullpen. Matt Svanson took the mound in the ninth inning and recorded exactly one batsman before imploding spectacularly. One-third of an inning. That’s all it took for the D-backs to dismantle whatever strategy the Cards thought they had.

The Ninth-Inning Collapse

Nolan Arenado's RBI double

Nolan Arenado, that perennial thorn in everyone’s side, led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and suddenly the Cardinals’ night started circling the drain. Gabriel Moreno scored, and Ildemaro Vargas moved to third. These weren’t defensive lapses or errors. These were quality at-bats against a pitcher who had no business being on that mound.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s two-run single

Then came the dagger. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. slapped a single through the middle, and two runs scored without any heroics required. Arizona had gone from trailing to leading 4-3 with one swing, and the Cardinals’ season just took a significant hit. Svanson’s ERA for the evening? Infinity. Or 27.00, if you’re being charitable.

Kevin Ginkel and Brandyn Garcia handled the rest. One inning of perfect relief work followed by a save situation converted with a strikeout. Clean, efficient, professional. That’s how you close out a game you’ve just stolen.

Cardinals Fight Back Too Little, Too Late

Alec Burleson's RBI double

To their credit, the Cardinals didn’t go quietly into the night. They scored three runs in the ninth inning themselves, showing fight and resilience. Alec Burleson doubled home a run, Blaze Jordan added another with a sacrifice fly, and Jimmy Crooks delivered a clutch single. It was the kind of ninth-inning performance that would have won most games.

Jimmy Crooks' RBI single

The problem? They were already trailing. When you blow a lead in a one-run game, you don’t get credit for scoring three runs in the next frame. You get an L in the standings.

Kyle Leahy pitched an excellent game for St. Louis, and Eduardo Rodriguez wasn’t bad for Arizona either. This was a ballgame that should have been decided by pitching quality, not by a catastrophic ninth-inning implosion from one relief pitcher. But that’s baseball, and that’s why games aren’t played on paper.

The Diamondbacks leave Busch Stadium with a theft, plain and simple. The Cardinals will spend the next week wondering why they entrusted their closer in the ninth to someone who shouldn’t have been anywhere near a save situation. That’s the difference between winning and losing in close games: judgment calls and execution. Arizona made theirs. St. Louis didn’t.
