The Cardinals’ offense was hardly overwhelming, scratching out just three runs across nine innings. But they came when it mattered most. Nathan Church emerged as the unlikely hero, delivering a crucial RBI single in the fourth inning that proved to be the game-winner. Church’s line drive to left field scored Masyn Winn and gave St. Louis breathing room they never relinquished.

Alec Burleson also drove in a run with a singles in the third, and Blaze Jordan contributed a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Cardinals played small ball baseball, manufacturing runs through gaps and productive outs rather than relying on power. It worked.

Arenado’s Return Overshadowed by Troy’s Lonely Shot

Nolan Arenado’s homecoming was the narrative everyone wanted to explore before first pitch, but the Hall of Famer’s evening was largely forgettable offensively. Arenado did record an RBI on a sharp groundout in the sixth, moving a run across the plate through sheer will and contact, but he didn’t exactly put on a show. The storyline of his return to St. Louis will dominate talk radio, but his bat didn’t dominate the ballpark on Monday.

The Diamondbacks’ only bright spot was Tommy Troy, who crushed a solo home run in the seventh inning off Cardinals pitching. Troy’s blast was the closest Arizona came to mounting a serious comeback, but one run in seven innings simply doesn’t cut it in the majors.

Merrill Kelly labored through six innings for Arizona, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts against three walks. He had his moments, notably escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, but he never truly commanded the game.

This was a Monday night game that felt like a Monday night game: forgettable, tight, and decided by inches and small moments rather than dramatic swings. The Cardinals got the result that matters, escaping with a division win and sending Arizona back to the desert with nothing. That’s baseball in late June, and the Cardinals will happily take it.
