Cardinals’ Bats Overwhelm Royals in High-Scoring Sunday Slugfest

This wasn’t baseball. This was a home run derby masquerading as a regular season game. The St. Louis Cardinals showed up to Kauffman Stadium on Sunday and reminded the Kansas City Royals that sometimes, when you’re on, you’re simply on. Let’s be clear about what happened in the first two innings. Stephen Kolek lasted all of 1.2 frames and surrendered nine earned runs. Nine. That’s not a quality start. JJ Wetherholt was the star turn, launching two solo homers and driving in three runs while going 3-for-5. Cardinals’ Lineup Put On a Display

Masyn Winn contributed a three-run home run in that first inning explosion. Alec Burleson tripled and went 3-for-5. Ivan Herrera homered in the fifth with two aboard. This wasn’t lightning striking once, twice, or even three times. This was a relentless barrage. The Cardinals had five different players record multiple hits, and four of them drove in runs. That’s championship-caliber offensive depth on display.

The Royals, to their credit, refused to go quietly. Jac Caglianone hit two homers himself, including a towering 444-footer. Carter Jensen, Michael Massey, and Nick Loftin all contributed. This was a slugfest with both teams putting on a home run clinic. But here’s the thing about these kinds of games: whoever gets out to the early lead almost always wins them, and St. Louis won that battle decisively.

Late Heroics Weren’t Enough

Kansas City clawed back in the late innings. Jensen went deep in the sixth, and Caglianone added another solo shot in the ninth. The Royals got it respectable at 12-10 with a run-scoring infield single from Lane Thomas in the ninth. For a moment, there was genuine tension. For a moment, you could sense the Royals believed.

But Gordon Graceffo came in and kept the door locked. One inning pitched, no hits, no runs, no walks. That’s your closer when you need him. Oliver Marmol’s club escaped with a win that felt far more dominant than the final margin suggested.

This game will be remembered for the offensive fireworks, but don’t overlook what St. Louis did defensively. They prevented disaster in multiple late-inning situations and made the pitches count when they had to. That’s the difference between winning 12-10 and losing 12-10.

The Cardinals proved Sunday that they can beat you with their lineup. The Royals proved they can swing it too. Only one team gets the W, though, and St. Louis left Kansas City with another victory to pad their ledger.
