Orioles outlast Mariners in slugfest: Rutschman, Alonso power Baltimore

That would be the final margin, and it proved to be just enough cushion for Tyler Wells and, more importantly, Andrew Kittredge, who notched the save with a pristine ninth inning.

Bryan Woo’s performance was nothing short of ugly. The Seattle starter lasted just five innings and surrendered seven runs on seven hits with only one walk. That’s the kind of outing that loses ballgames, especially when you’re facing a lineup as talented as Baltimore’s. Tyler Wells, meanwhile, pitched just three scoreless innings for the Orioles, allowing nothing but a walk. It’s telling that neither starter was available for a deep postseason-style appearance, yet Baltimore’s depth proved superior down the stretch.

Rutschman Is Simply Special

Adley Rutschman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and his two-run double in the third inning was the dagger. This is what elite offensive catchers do: they change games with a single swing. Rutschman is on pace for a career year, and moments like Thursday night in Baltimore show why he’s become one of the AL’s most dangerous hitters. Pete Alonso’s two-run blast added the exclamation point, proving that the Orioles’ front office made a savvy investment in the veteran slugger.

The Mariners had their chances and came closer than the final score suggests. But baseball, at its core, is still about executing when it matters most. On Thursday night, Baltimore executed better in crucial situations, and that’s why they’re leaving Camden Yards with a victory.
