Phillies Bomb Past Blue Jays Behind Luzardo’s Brilliance

The Philadelphia Phillies came to Rogers Centre on Wednesday and reminded the Toronto Blue Jays why power baseball still wins ballgames. The Phillies pounded their way to a 7-4 victory behind a dominant pitching performance from Jesús Luzardo and a three-man wrecking crew in the middle of the lineup that simply refused to be denied.

This wasn’t a close game despite what the final score suggests. The Phillies essentially put this one away by the fourth inning, jumping out to a 6-0 lead that made Max Scherzer look every bit his age. The legendary right-hander lasted just 3.1 innings, surrendering five runs on five hits while walking three batters. For a pitcher of Scherzer’s caliber, it was an ugly night, though he did reach his 3,500th career strikeout in the process, a milestone that feels almost quaint given how thoroughly he was dismantled.

Bryce Harper's solo home run (15)

Bryce Harper got things started immediately with a solo blast in the first inning off Scherzer. It was the kind of statement swing that told you exactly what kind of evening this would be for Toronto’s pitching staff.

Alec Bohm's three-run home run (3)

But the real dagger came in the third inning when Alec Bohm stepped up and crushed a three-run homer to left-center. That blast capped a rally that included two more runs and essentially ended any hope the Blue Jays had of staging a comeback. Bohm finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, and frankly, he could have had more damage against a Toronto bullpen that was asked to do heavy lifting early.

Kyle Schwarber's two-run home run (24)

Kyle Schwarber added another two-run shot in the fourth inning off Scherzer, making it 6-0 Phillies. Schwarber now has 24 home runs on the season and continues to be a legitimate MVP candidate. The man is simply on a different level right now, and the Blue Jays found that out the hard way.

Luzardo Shuts Down Toronto

On the mound, Luzardo was spectacular for the Phillies. The left-hander went 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out eight batters and walking four. He kept the Blue Jays’ potentially dangerous lineup completely off-balance, and his eight strikeouts on Wednesday showed why he’s become one of the most feared arms in the National League.

Jesús Luzardo's eight strikeouts

The Blue Jays scraped together four runs, mostly through small ball and sloppy Philadelphia defense. Brandon Valenzuela’s RBI single in the sixth inning got them on the board, and a late-inning rally in the seventh involving Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Ernie Clement, and Kazuma Okamoto accounted for three more runs. But it was far too little, far too late.

Duran Closes It Out

Jhoan Duran came in for the save situation and made quick work of it, pitching 1.0 inning of clean baseball. The Phillies’ bullpen was sharp all night, and that’s ultimately what separates good teams from great ones.

Tyler Rogers' impressive shovel play

This was a statement win for Philadelphia. The Phillies showed they can score in bunches, pitch effectively, and not beat themselves despite a throwing error by right fielder Adolis García. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, need to have a serious conversation about their starting rotation and whether Max Scherzer can still eat innings the way championship teams need him to. This loss stung, and Toronto knows it.
