Rasmussen’s 13 K’s Carry Rays Past Red Sox in Slugfest

Drew Rasmussen put on a masterclass on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field, striking out 13 Red Sox batters over seven scoreless innings. Yet somehow, Tampa Bay needed Garrett Cleavinger‘s save in the ninth to escape with a 7-5 victory over Boston. If that seems backwards, well, welcome to baseball in 2026, where elite pitching can still lose to timely hitting and sheer determination.

Rasmussen was absolutely unhittable for the first seven innings. He allowed just two hits while walking only one batter. The kid was operating on another plane of existence, striking out the side in the first inning and never looking back. This was a performance worthy of a standing ovation, the kind of outing that reminds you why scouts lose sleep over certain prospects. Yet his brilliance on the mound masked deeper issues with Tampa’s bullpen and, frankly, some sloppy execution down the stretch.

Boston’s Ninth-Inning Surge Almost Steals It

The Red Sox looked dead in the water entering the eighth inning. Caleb Durbin had launched a solo shot in the eighth, but that seemed like consolation prize territory. Then something clicked. Ceddanne Rafaela uncorked a three-run bomb to left field that made it 6-5, and suddenly Boston had life. Durbin came back in the ninth and went deep again, his second homer of the game, tying things up at 7-7 and sending Tropicana Field into an anxious silence.

Here’s where you have to tip your cap to Cleavinger. The save situation got messy, sure, but he recorded the final out when it mattered most. Durbin’s heroics proved to be too little, too late, even though Jake Bennett‘s pedestrian start (5 innings, 7 hits, 4 earned runs) put the Red Sox in a hole from which they couldn’t quite escape.

Tampa’s Efficient Approach Prevails

The Rays didn’t need to hit home runs. They executed the fundamentals with surgical precision. Nick Fortes went 4-for-4, a perfect night at the plate. Yandy Diaz collected three hits and drove in two runs. Taylor Walls and Ryan Vilade contributed crucial sacrifice flies. Austin Slater’s double in the fifth proved critical, deflecting off Bennett and scoring a run. This wasn’t flashy baseball, but it was effective baseball, the kind that wins in the postseason.

Tampa Bay scored its runs early, building a 4-0 lead through five innings before Boston could mount any real resistance. The Rays added a fifth run in the sixth on another Diaz single, establishing what appeared to be comfortable cushioning. Cedric Mullins‘ two-run shot in the eighth appeared to ice it, extending the lead to 7-4.

But baseball doesn’t award games based on comfort. Durbin’s back-to-back homers made it agonizing, and if the Red Sox had found one more run with runners in scoring position, we’d be talking about a completely different narrative. They didn’t. The Rays survived their bullpen’s near-meltdown and walked away with a victory that should’ve been easier than it was.

Sometimes elite pitching carries you through. Sometimes it doesn’t quite matter. Wednesday night was a reminder that baseball rewards consistency and execution over individual brilliance, even when that brilliance is a career-high 13 strikeouts.
