What looked like it might be a pitcher’s duel through six innings turned into an absolute slugfest in the final frames, with the Marlins’ lineup finally breaking through against Arizona’s increasingly fragile pitching staff. This was baseball at its most chaotic and entertaining, and the Fish were simply better when it mattered most.

Let’s start with the elephant in the room: Brandyn Garcia‘s catastrophic 0.2-inning outing was the turning point. The Arizona reliever couldn’t record a single out, surrendering two hits and four earned runs before getting yanked from the game. In a contest decided by four runs, that implosion in relief was the difference between a nail-biter and a decisive victory. Arizona’s pitching depth was exposed like never before, and Miami capitalized without mercy.

Marte and Carroll Keep D-Backs Afloat

Credit where credit is due: Arizona’s middle of the order showed up. Ketel Marte was absolutely phenomenal, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs on a pair of doubles and a crucial two-run single in the eighth. Corbin Carroll added a homer and two RBIs of his own, while Gabriel Moreno chipped in with his fifth home run of the season. These three did everything possible to carry their team, but when your relief pitchers are getting shelled and your starter can’t escape the second inning, individual brilliance means nothing.

The Diamondbacks actually had their moments. Carroll’s solo shot in the first inning gave Arizona an early lead, and Arizona managed to string together enough scoring chances to stay competitive through six innings. But baseball isn’t about close games in the early frames, it’s about execution down the stretch. The D-Backs’ execution in the eighth inning was abysmal.

Miami’s Balanced Attack Proves Too Much

Here’s what impressed me about the Marlins’ victory: it wasn’t one guy carrying the load. Joe Mack went 4-for-4, a perfect night at the plate that kept adding runners in scoring position. Otto Lopez contributed three hits and sparked the rally with a crucial go-ahead single in the eighth. Then role players like Javier Sanoja (two RBIs), Esteury Ruiz (one RBI), Kyle Stowers (two RBIs), and Connor Norby provided layered depth that Arizona simply couldn’t match.

Pete Fairbanks got the win despite pitching only one inning, which tells you everything about how ugly this game became for Arizona. Max Meyer and Zac Gallen both did their jobs reasonably well in regulation, but once the wheels came off in the eighth, there was no putting them back on. The Marlins’ eighth inning was a masterclass in situational hitting. They manufactured run after run with controlled aggression, and Arizona’s defense looked lost.

This game showed that the Marlins are more dangerous than their record might suggest. When their lineup gets hot, they can beat anybody.
