Giants Obliterate Cubs 18-3 Behind Home Run Barrage at Wrigley

There are beatings, and then there are the kind of nights that make you question whether the opposing pitcher should’ve just stayed home. Friday at Wrigley Field belonged entirely to the San Francisco Giants, who turned what should’ve been a competitive division matchup into an absolute demolition derby, cruising to an 18-3 victory that felt less like a baseball game and more like batting practice.

The Giants didn’t just win this one. They humiliated the Cubs with seven home runs, turning Edward Cabrera‘s start into an early exit at 3.2 innings. Robbie Ray, meanwhile, cruised through five innings without allowing an earned run, striking out four while walking five. Sometimes a game tells you everything you need to know about two teams’ trajectories in a single night, and this was that kind of night for Chicago.

Chapman’s Eight-RBI Clinic Steals the Show

Matt Chapman was absolutely unconscionable at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two home runs and a staggering eight RBIs. His grand slam in the fourth inning was the moment the game fundamentally broke. But it was his second homer in the sixth, with runners on second and third, that crystallized just how thoroughly the Cubs had lost control. Chapman didn’t just drive in runs. He dismantled the opposing pitching staff with the kind of efficiency that makes front offices nervous.

But Chapman wasn’t alone in this offensive onslaught. Willy Adames went yard twice, finishing 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Casey Schmitt homered twice as well, going 4-for-6 with three RBIs. Remarkably, Jonah Cox hit his first Major League home run in the ninth inning, capping off what might’ve been the worst defensive showing of the Cubs’ season.

The Cubs’ Impotent Response

Chicago managed exactly three runs, and frankly, those came more out of pity than any genuine offensive pressure. Seiya Suzuki hit a solo shot in the eighth to keep from getting completely no-hit, and Carson Kelly added an RBI single. That was basically the extent of the Cubs’ threat. The Cubs offense looked completely lost against a Giants pitching staff that, when healthy and sharp, can be as dominant as anyone in the National League.

Craig Counsell will have plenty to answer for after this one, though the truth is that sometimes you run into a buzzsaw and there’s nothing you can do about it. The Giants were operating on another level Friday night, and Wrigley Field became their personal playground rather than the storied venue that’s supposed to give the home team an edge.

This wasn’t baseball so much as it was target practice. The Giants showed why they’re built to make a serious postseason run, while the Cubs got a brutal reminder that some nights, you’re just outgunned from first pitch to last.
