Mariners Walk Off in 10th as Mets’ Bullpen Implodes in Seattle

Sometimes baseball rewards the team that simply refuses to quit, and on Monday night at T-Mobile Park, the Seattle Mariners proved they had more fight left in the tank than the New York Mets. In a game that felt like it should have been decided in regulation but somehow slipped into extras, Cole Young delivered the ultimate gut punch with a walk-off single in the 10th inning, sending the Mariners home with a 3-2 victory that will haunt the Mets all the way back to Queens.

This was a game that had all the makings of a satisfying Mets triumph. Marcus Semien‘s solo blast in the sixth inning had given New York a 2-1 advantage, and frankly, the visiting team looked like they had seized control. Jared Young had already gone yard in the fifth to tie things up, so the Mets had the momentum. They had the lead. They had every reason to believe they’d escape this West Coast tilt with a victory.

Josh Naylor's game-tying home run (6)

Then Josh Naylor decided otherwise. The Mariners slugger hammered a solo shot in the seventh that knotted the game at 2-2, and suddenly all the air went out of the Mets’ balloon. What should have been a straightforward win became a slog into extra innings, a place where nobody wanted to be on this particular Monday evening.

The culprit here wasn’t any spectacular Mariners heroics through nine innings. It was the Mets’ complete inability to close out a team that had spotted them prime opportunities. A.J. Minter‘s brief and brutal appearance in relief set the tone for New York’s downfall, and once that door cracked open, the Mariners came pouring through like a team possessed. This is what happens when your bullpen fails to respect its responsibilities. You go home empty.

The ABS Disaster

Here’s where this game gets genuinely infuriating for baseball purists. The Automated Ball-Strike system was on full display Monday night, and frankly, it was an absolute mess. Multiple ABS challenges went back and forth, with balls becoming strikes and strikes becoming balls at an alarming rate. Three different challenges overturned ball calls to strikes. Another overturned a strike to a ball. This is supposed to make the game better? It looked like pure chaos, like nobody trusted anyone, and the integrity of the strike zone went out the window. If baseball wanted to prove that technology can ruin the beautiful game, Monday was Exhibit A.

A Walk-Off Nobody Saw Coming

Cole Young’s single in the tenth wasn’t a thunderbolt or a three-run blast. It was a soft line drive to left field that found Juan Soto’s glove area just a hair too late. Randy Arozarena scored on the play, and just like that, the Mets’ Monday night was over. It was anticlimactic and devastating in equal measure. Young, who wasn’t exactly having the game of his life, somehow delivered when it mattered most. That’s baseball, for better or worse.

Cole Young on extra-innings walk-off

The Mets will fly home wondering how they let this one slip away. They had it won. They really did. But baseball is unforgiving, and the Mariners proved why you never count them out, no matter how bleak the ninth inning looks.
