Rays outlast Angels behind McClanahan’s steady arm and early firepower

The Tampa Bay Rays did what they do best on Sunday at Tropicana Field, playing efficient baseball and making the most of their opportunities against a Los Angeles Angels team that never found its footing. The Rays won 5-2, with Shane McClanahan delivering exactly what they needed from their starter and the lineup manufacturing runs through a combination of power and patience.

Let’s be clear about what happened here: the Angels got out to a slow start and Jack Kochanowicz‘s inability to locate his fastball early proved absolutely catastrophic. The guy lasted just 2.1 innings, surrendering five hits and three earned runs while walking four batters. That’s not a recipe for success against anyone, especially a Rays lineup that’s been swinging it pretty well lately. When your starting pitcher can’t find the strike zone, you’re essentially playing with one hand tied behind your back, and that’s exactly what happened in St. Petersburg.

Jonathan Aranda's solo home run (11)

Jonathan Aranda got the party started with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, his 11th of the season. It wasn’t flashy or complicated, just a fly ball to right field that found the seats. The Rays added two more runs in the third on an RBI single by Victor Mesa Jr. and an RBI walk from Cedric Mullins. Three runs in the first three innings is plenty when you’ve got quality pitching, and that’s exactly what McClanahan provided.

Shane McClanahan strikes out Mike Trout

McClanahan worked five innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and striking out three while walking nobody. That’s the kind of efficient, professional outing that wins ballgames. He didn’t blow anyone away with velocity numbers, but he pitched to contact, trusted his defense, and got out of trouble when he needed to. This is baseball in 2026, folks, and McClanahan’s got the formula figured out.

Logan O'Hoppe's solo home run (2)

The Angels scraped together a run in the seventh when Logan O'Hoppe hit a solo homer to left field off what was presumably a hanging breaking ball. O’Hoppe went 2-for-4 with that blast, and he was basically the only bright spot in the entire Angels lineup. Mike Trout struck out looking in a key situation, which really tells you everything you need to know about how this game unfolded for Los Angeles.

Ben Williamson's RBI single

The Rays added insurance in the seventh, getting RBI singles from Ben Williamson and an RBI walk from Yandy Diaz to push the lead to 5-1. Bryan Baker came in for the save situation and handled it cleanly with a 1.0 IP appearance, striking out one. Nothing fancy, nothing that needed to be fancy.

Condensed Game: LAA@TB – 5/31/26

Here’s the bottom line: Tampa Bay did what Tampa Bay does. They played small ball when they needed to, got quality starts from their pitching, and didn’t beat themselves. The Angels, conversely, got poor early pitching, couldn’t manufacture enough offense to compensate, and left town empty-handed. This is the difference between a team that’s built to compete and one that’s still trying to find its identity. The Rays are the former, and it showed on Sunday.
