The Red Sox mounted a legitimate comeback attempt in the fifth inning, scratching out three runs on three sacrifice flies and some timely hitting. Marcelo Mayer‘s RBI single got things rolling, Caleb Durbin’s double drove in another, and Jarren Duran’s sacrifice fly made it interesting at 4-3. For a moment, you could feel the momentum shifting. But the Guardians’ pitching held firm, and that was that.

Bullpen Strength Wins the Day

Here’s what separates winners from pretenders in May: bullpen execution. Colin Holderman got the win after pitching 1.1 innings of clean baseball following Samaniego’s disaster, and more importantly, Cade Smith was utterly dominant in recording his MLB-leading 20th save. One inning, three strikeouts, nothing hit hard. That’s closure. That’s professional baseball. The Red Sox had their chances, but Smith wasn’t interested in theatrics.

The Red Sox could take solace in the fact that their own pitching eventually found its footing, with Brayan Bello apparently throwing seven shutout innings and posting his 500th career strikeout. But here’s the thing about pitching well after your starter implodes: it doesn’t matter much if you’re already down four runs. Bello’s excellence was too little and far too late.

Defensive Gems and Costly Mistakes

Daniel Schneemann’s sliding grab in center field was the kind of defensive highlight that shows up on SportsCenter, but we can’t ignore that he also committed a fielding error on Martínez’s single in that first inning. That error directly led to an additional run scoring. You want to be remembered for the highlight? Don’t give away free runs in the opening frame. Angel Martínez’s throw to the plate nailing Mickey Gasper showed that Cleveland’s defense was locked in when it mattered most.

Cleveland wins one-run games. That’s their identity this season. Boston had their chances to steal this one on Friday night, but baseball rewards execution and decisiveness. The Guardians struck first, struck hard, and made those early runs stick. The Red Sox learned the hard way that in this league, you can’t spot teams four runs and expect to recover. Not on Friday nights in Cleveland.
