D-Backs Edge Giants in Slugfest at Oracle Park

The Arizona Diamondbacks came to Oracle Park on Tuesday and refused to get pushed around, outlasting the San Francisco Giants 7-5 in a game that had all the makings of a spring training exhibition, except with actual consequences. Both offenses came to swing, both bullpens showed cracks, and ultimately it was the team with better execution in the clutch that walked away victorious.

Rodriguez Keeps Arizona Afloat

Eduardo Rodriguez deserves the game ball here, and it should come with a sincere thank you note. The Diamondbacks starter cruised through six innings, giving up just two earned runs on six hits while striking out six Giants hitters. More importantly, he got out of trouble when it mattered most, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the middle innings by punching out Nolan Arenado. That’s the kind of performance that wins close games, and Rodriguez delivered when Arizona needed him to keep this thing close after San Francisco’s early assault.

Tyler Mahle, meanwhile, had all the problems a losing pitcher could have. Three earned runs in five innings, three walks, and generally looking like he’d rather be literally anywhere else. The Giants got their early runs, led 1-0 after Casey Schmitt‘s first-inning solo shot, and pushed it to 4-1 after two innings. But Mahle couldn’t string together quality innings, and when you’re in a slugfest, that’s a death sentence.

Marte Delivers When It Counts

Ketel Marte went 1-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs, which sounds pedestrian until you remember that in a 7-5 game, a two-run blast in the seventh inning is pretty much the difference maker right there. The Diamondbacks were clawing back all night, and Marte’s fly ball to left field provided the punctuation mark on a successful comeback narrative. Adrian Del Castillo also chipped in with a solo shot earlier in the evening, and Gabriel Moreno put in work with some crucial situational hitting.

The Giants weren’t going quietly, though. Eric Haase and Willy Adames both went deep in the late innings, keeping San Francisco’s hopes alive. Adames even added a solo shot in the ninth inning to make it interesting, capping a solid night at the plate for the Giants’ shortstop. Casey Schmitt had himself a game too, finishing 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs, showing why he’s become a legitimate contributor for this Giants lineup.

But the final answer belonged to Paul Sewald, who came in for the save situation and shut the door. One inning of work, one strikeout, one save secured. That’s efficient, that’s professional, and that’s exactly what the Diamondbacks needed after Mahle and the Giants’ bullpen had made this game competitive all night long.

Arizona gets the road win in what amounted to a showcase of mediocre pitching propped up by just enough timely hitting. Sometimes in baseball, that’s all you need. The Diamondbacks took it, the Giants have to lick their wounds, and we all move on to Wednesday.
