Twins Complete Sweep, Steal One from Red Sox in Fenway Thriller

The Minnesota Twins came to Fenway Park on Sunday and left with exactly what they came for: a series sweep and another W in the win column. Final score: 6-5, Twins. And yes, this one hurt for Red Sox Nation, because Boston had every opportunity to put this thing away and instead managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the most predictable way possible.

Let’s talk about what went wrong for Boston first, because frankly, the Red Sox deserve all the blame here. Tyron Guerrero lasted 0.2 innings. ZERO POINT TWO. That’s not a start, that’s a cameo appearance. The guy couldn’t get out of the first inning after giving up two runs on two hits. That’s the kind of pitching performance that gets you fired in any professional league, and the Red Sox faithful had every right to start booing immediately. Sure, Bailey Ober for Minnesota wasn’t exactly Cy Young material either, lasting five innings with seven hits and four runs allowed, but at least he gave his team a chance to win.

Austin Martin, Brooks Lee lift Twins to series sweep

But here’s where the Twins showed why they belong in this conversation: they didn’t panic. Down 5-3 heading into the sixth, Minnesota loaded up and brought the heat. Austin Martin doubled sharply down the left field line to score Orlando Arcia, and then Brooks Lee came through with a clutch two-run single that put the Twins ahead 6-5. That’s championship baseball right there. That’s the kind of late-inning execution that separates teams that make October appearances from teams that watch them on television.

Brooks Lee's two-run single

Travis Adams came in for the save situation in the ninth and didn’t allow a peep. One-third of an inning, spotless. Meanwhile, the Red Sox had mounted one final threat with Isiah Kiner-Falefa doubling in the ninth, but that’s where it died. Connor Wong was thrown out at home on a line-drive double play that required multiple replay reviews. Two challenges, both upheld. The baseball gods weren’t having it.

Red Sox Bats Showed Up, Just Not Enough

To be fair to Boston, Willson Contreras and Masataka Yoshida both came to play on Sunday. Contreras cranked an 11th homer of the season, a two-run bomb that gave the Red Sox what looked like a commanding 5-2 lead at the time. Yoshida added a solo shot earlier. These aren’t light hitters. But when your starting pitcher can’t throw strikes consistently, none of that matters. The bullpen has to be better, and Boston’s pen was a sieve.

Twins Execute When It Counts

Orlando Arcia went 3-for-5 and was a constant thorn in Boston’s side all afternoon. Kody Clemens started the whole thing with an RBI single in the first. But the real story here is Minnesota’s composure down the stretch. They trailed, they didn’t blink, and they found a way to win on the road against a division rival. That’s the hallmark of a good baseball team.

Austin Martin's RBI double

The Twins head home with a complete sweep and momentum heading into their next series. The Red Sox? They’ll be looking for answers in that starting rotation because Sunday’s performance was completely unacceptable. This one’s on Boston, no excuses.
