Jung’s Late Single Lifts Rangers Past Rockies in Colorado Thriller

Josh Jung came through when it mattered most, and that’s really all you need to know about Wednesday’s Rangers-Rockies showdown at Coors Field. In a game that had more twists than a pretzel factory, Texas escaped Denver with a 5-4 victory that felt far more comfortable than the final score suggests. Jung’s three-hit performance capped off a Rangers offensive display that, for once, didn’t completely surrender to the thin air and short porch of Colorado’s notorious bandbox.

The Rangers did what they needed to do, which is swing early and often against mediocre pitching. Ezequiel Duran and Jake Burger went back-to-back in the fourth inning, providing the kind of power display that makes you remember why baseball is still worth watching. Duran’s two-run shot and Burger’s solo blast transformed what looked like a slugfest into a Rangers advantage. It wasn’t pretty, and it certainly wasn’t elegant, but it was effective.

The Rockies, as is their custom, refused to die quietly. They clawed back with a combination of solid contact and some favorable umpiring decisions. Tyler Freeman and Troy Johnston each drove in runs in the fifth to keep Colorado’s playoff hopes, however slim they may be, flickering. The game went back and forth like two tired heavyweights in round 12, each side trading blows without the killer instinct to finish it.

The Drama of September Baseball in May

Enter the ninth inning, where Jung delivered the dagger that Colorado couldn’t overcome. His go-ahead single put the Rangers within striking distance of actually securing a win on the road, something that’s harder to come by than finding a rational Rockies fan. Jacob Latz, who appeared in garbage time for just 2.0 innings, somehow ended up with the win, which speaks volumes about the chaos that unfolded before him. Brennan Bernardino got tagged with the loss despite barely getting anyone out, a fitting summary of Colorado’s perpetual bullpen troubles.

What made this game particularly maddening was the constant replay reviews and ABS challenges that seemed to eat up more time than actual baseball. The technology is supposed to make the game better, but instead it creates these glacial stoppages that drain the life out of the proceedings. There’s something fundamentally broken about a game that requires this much administrative oversight. Yet somehow, Jung’s moment still cut through all that noise and nonsense.

Justin Foscue went 3-for-5 for the Rangers, proving once again that consistency matters more than flash in this league. Burger’s diving stop in the field showed that Texas was also willing to do the dirty work required to win games in Denver. Meanwhile, the Rockies showed just enough glimpses of competence to torture their fanbase with what-ifs and near-misses.

Bottom Line

Texas leaves Colorado with a much-needed victory, the kind of win that separates contenders from pretenders down the stretch. Jung’s performance was the difference, plain and simple. The Rangers bullpen held up when it needed to, and that’s all that matters on a Wednesday night in May when you’re 1,500 miles from home. The Rockies, meanwhile, go back to asking the same questions they always ask: why can’t they finish games, and when will their roster finally gel? Those answers won’t come from watching defeats like this.
