A’s Walk Off Angels in 10th, Soderstrom Delivers Game-Winner

Sometimes the Angels’ bullpen does what it does best: surrender games that should have been won. On Wednesday night at Angel Stadium, the Los Angeles Angels had every opportunity to put away the Oakland Athletics, but instead watched a 5-3 lead evaporate in the ninth inning and then collapse entirely in the 10th. The A’s walked out of Anaheim with a 6-5 victory, and frankly, the Angels have nobody to blame but themselves.

The Angels came out swinging early, jumping on Oakland starter Jack Kochanowicz for three runs in the first two innings. Jorge Soler‘s two-run blast in the first and a pair of homers from Jo Adell and Josh Lowe in the second had the home crowd feeling confident. Even after surrendering two early runs to Tyler Soderstrom‘s two-run single in the top of the first, the Angels looked like they had control of this game.

But here’s where the Angels’ pitching staff, particularly Chase Silseth in relief, completely fell apart. In the seventh, Soderstrom helped fuel another A’s rally with an RBI single that cut the deficit. Then came the ninth inning, when Los Angeles’ relievers imploded spectacularly. Jeff McNeil, who had been relatively quiet through eight innings, stepped up and launched a go-ahead homer off Angels pitching to tie the game at 5-5. Just like that, the Angels’ comfortable cushion had vanished.

The 10th inning belonged entirely to Oakland. Soderstrom, who had been a thorn in the Angels’ side all night with his clutch hitting, ripped a triple to left field. Nick Kurtz scored the go-ahead run, and suddenly the Angels were looking at a one-run deficit with nowhere to go. Scott Barlow had already cruised through the 10th for Oakland, and Hogan Harris came in to clean things up with a clean final frame, earning the save.

Soderstrom the Difference Maker

Let’s be clear about who won this game: Tyler Soderstrom. The Athletics catcher went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and was involved in the two most crucial moments of this contest. His two-run single in the first got Oakland within striking distance, and his game-winning triple in the 10th delivered the knockout blow. In a game filled with home runs, Soderstrom’s textbook plate discipline and clutch hitting proved far more valuable than any solo shot.

Angels Waste Another Opportunity

This loss stings for Los Angeles because they had this game won. Soler, Adell, and Lowe all contributed homers, and the Angels held a two-run lead going into the ninth. That’s usually a position of strength, but not against a team that refuses to quit. The Angels’ relief pitching has been a chronic problem all season, and Wednesday night was just another example of how their inability to close out games continues to haunt them. They’re 0-for-opportunity when it matters most, and frankly, at some point you run out of excuses.
