Riley’s three-run blast powers Braves past toothless Red Sox

Austin Riley didn’t just beat the Boston Red Sox on Sunday at Truist Park. He embarrassed them. The lefty couldn’t locate his fastball, walked three batters, and surrendered seven earned runs across just five innings of work. One strikeout. One! Against a Braves lineup that looked genuinely locked in. Bello’s performance was less pitching and more target practice, and the Braves made him pay for every mistake with ruthless efficiency.

Holmes Deals, Braves Cruise

On the flip side, Grant Holmes was everything Boston’s staff wasn’t. The right-hander pitched six scoreless innings of five-hit baseball, striking out four and walking just one. He was composed, confident, and surgical with his pitch placement. This is the kind of performance that gets wins, and Holmes understood the assignment completely. While Bello was throwing meatballs, Holmes was painting corners and exploiting weaknesses in a Red Sox lineup that looked desperate and disorganized.

The Braves’ bats didn’t stop swinging after Riley’s opening salvo either. Mike Yastrzemski added his own solo shot in the fourth, a no-nonsense blast to right field that extended Atlanta’s lead to 5-0. Drake Baldwin orchestrated chaos in the second inning with a clutch walk that scored Jorge Mateo, and Matt Olson followed with an RBI groundout that added another run. The Braves were playing small-ball excellence, manufacturing runs through both power and precision.

Red Sox Sputter to Pathetic One-Run Finish

Boston’s only moment of relevance came in the ninth inning when Nick Sogard doubled home Connor Wong. One run. Across nine innings against an Atlanta team that wasn’t even at its best, the Red Sox mustered exactly one run. That’s not baseball, that’s a funeral service. This wasn’t a competitive matchup or a hard-fought divisional battle. This was a beatdown, pure and simple.

The Red Sox came to Atlanta looking to make a statement in May. Instead, they issued one of their own: that they’re not built to compete at this level, not today, and potentially not this season. Bello’s implosion, the anemic offensive output, and the complete lack of adjustments made this a Sunday to forget in Boston. Meanwhile, the Braves proved once again why they’re contenders. Riley found his swing, Holmes found his control, and Atlanta found an eight-run victory. That’s championship baseball.
