Cubs Cruise Past White Sox Behind Kelly’s Bat and Thornton’s Arm

The Chicago Cubs came to Rate Field on Friday and reminded everyone why they’re built to contend, methodically dismantling the White Sox 10-5 in a game that was far more decisive than the final score suggests. This wasn’t some back-and-forth slugfest where momentum swung wildly. This was the Cubs getting hot at exactly the right time and the White Sox pitching staff collapsing like a house of cards.

Let’s start with the obvious: Carson Kelly was absolutely magnificent. Three hits in five at-bats with four RBIs? That’s the kind of performance that wins ballgames, and Kelly delivered when it mattered most. His go-ahead RBI single in the early innings set the tone, and his two-run double in the eighth basically put this thing on ice. When you’ve got a catcher hitting like an outfielder, you’re going to win more games than you lose.

But Kelly didn’t do this alone. The entire Cubs offense was clicking on Friday night. Ian Happ got things started with an early RBI single, and then the middle of the order started applying pressure. Michael Busch’s RBI double in the fifth, Seiya Suzuki’s line drive double down the line, Pete Crow-Armstrong’s clutch single in the seventh, Matt Shaw’s bases-loaded walk in the eighth that pushed another run across. This was baseball the way it’s supposed to be played: aggressive baserunning, situational hitting, and relentless pressure.

Carson Kelly's two-run double

What’s really damning for the White Sox is how their pitching staff unraveled. Bryan Hudson lasted just one inning. One inning! Four hits and two runs before the White Sox had to go to the bullpen. That’s the kind of collapse that puts a manager in a foul mood heading to the postgame presser. The Cubs scored 10 runs, sure, but they did it efficiently, with runners in scoring position and men on base. This wasn’t luck. This was execution meeting opportunity.

Sox Had Their Moments, But Never Enough

To be fair to the White Sox, they weren’t completely incompetent. Colson Montgomery hit a solo shot to get them on the board early. Miguel Vargas connected for a homer in the sixth that made it 6-4, giving Chicago some hope. Even Jarred Kelenic got in on the action with a ninth-inning solo shot off a reliever. But here’s the thing about baseball: you need to score more runs than the other team, and the White Sox simply didn’t do that on Friday.

Thornton’s Quality Start Sets the Tone

Trent Thornton deserves credit for getting the win here. Two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no walks is the definition of a quality relief appearance. He kept the game close early and let the Cubs’ offense do what it does best. That’s pitching smart and pitching to contact, something Bryan Hudson clearly didn’t do.

Javier Assad finishes Cubs' win

The Cubs are building something real in Chicago. Friday’s performance proved they can beat you in multiple ways: solid pitching, explosive offense, and smart baseball. The White Sox need to figure out their pitching rotation before it costs them an entire season. This was a statement victory, and the Cubs made it loud and clear.
