Luke Raley Goes Nuclear: Mariners Blast White Sox 12-8 Behind Two-Homer Night

Friday night at Rate Field belonged to Luke Raley, plain and simple. The Seattle Mariners‘ outfielder put on a masterclass in power hitting, smashing two home runs and driving in seven runs to propel the visiting Mariners to a 12-8 victory over the Chicago White Sox. This wasn’t just any win, this was a statement game, the kind that reminds you why baseball’s best players earn their paychecks.

Raley’s first blow came in the third inning when he connected on a Sean Burke fastball for a grand slam that cleared the bases and essentially put this game out of reach before most fans had finished their first beer. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, he came back in the seventh and launched a three-run shot to right field that turned what could have been a competitive ballgame into a Mariners coronation.

Seven RBIs. Seven. That’s the kind of night that gets talked about in Seattle sports bars for years, and rightfully so. Raley wasn’t alone in his offensive onslaught either. Josh Naylor added a three-run blast of his own in the eighth, while Julio Rodriguez chipped in with a solo shot. When your lineup can generate that kind of firepower, opposing pitchers might as well not bother showing up.

The White Sox Fought But Never Had A Chance

To be fair to Chicago, they didn’t roll over without a fight. Munetaka Murakami started the festivities with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, and Colson Montgomery contributed a bases-clearing double that brought the White Sox back into the mix momentarily. Randal Grichuk added a solo shot in the ninth to keep things respectable on the scoreboard, but respectable doesn’t win games, and the White Sox learned that lesson the hard way.

Sean Burke took the loss after lasting just 4.1 innings and allowing six runs on six hits. That’s simply not good enough when you’re facing an opponent’s lineup playing with this much confidence. The White Sox defense tried to keep pace, with Montgomery making a nice grab to show they cared, but offensively they were outgunned.

Hancock Gets The Win In Workmanlike Performance

Emerson Hancock earned the victory for Seattle with six solid innings of work, surrendering five runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. It wasn’t spectacular, but it was efficient. When your offense is putting up 12 runs, you don’t need your starter to be dominant, you need him to be dependable. Hancock checked that box, leaving the game in relatively good shape for the Seattle bullpen to finish the job.

The Mariners’ balanced offensive attack, combined with adequate pitching, proved to be the winning formula on Friday night. This is what contending baseball looks like, and Seattle showed they understand the assignment. With performances like Raley’s on display, the Mariners should be considered a legitimate threat in their division for the remainder of the season. The White Sox, meanwhile, head back to the drawing board knowing they got exposed by a superior lineup that simply refused to be denied.
