Astros Power Past Red Sox Behind Walker and Matthews

The Houston Astros came to Boston on Saturday and did what too many visiting teams fail to do at Fenway Park: they imposed their will early and often, grinding out a 6-3 victory over the Red Sox. This was a complete performance from top to bottom, the kind of road win that actually matters in May when the standings still mean something.

Walker and Matthews Muscle the Astros to Victory

Christian Walker was absolutely magnificent at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homer and driving in two runs. He wasn’t just getting hits, he was getting quality hits, including a crushing solo shot in the fifth that put the Astros firmly in control. This is the kind of performance that separates good teams from great ones, and Walker delivered it when his club needed it most.

But Walker couldn’t carry the entire load by himself, and frankly, he didn’t need to. Brice Matthews came off the bench and delivered a three-run bomb in the fourth inning that essentially decided the contest before it was even halfway through. Matthews’ blast turned a 1-0 lead into a commanding 4-0 advantage, and that’s the difference between a nail-biter and a convincing road victory. When your bench hitters are capable of that kind of damage, your lineup becomes virtually impossible to pitch to.

The Astros’ offensive attack was built on quality at-bats and an ability to make Boston starter Connelly Early work. Early simply couldn’t locate his fastball, walking five batters in just four innings before getting pulled. That’s the baseball equivalent of waving the white flag, and the Astros took full advantage of his struggles.

Arrighetti Gets the Job Done Despite Command Issues

Spencer Arrighetti picked up the win despite issuing five walks in five innings of work. That’s not pretty, and in a tighter game, those free passes could have come back to haunt him. But Arrighetti showed the poise of a pitcher who understands that strikeouts matter more than walks when you’ve got a comfortable lead. He struck out four batters and allowed just one earned run, which is perfectly acceptable pitching for a road game at a hitter’s paradise.

Bryan King came in for the save situation and slammed the door shut in the ninth, retiring the side without incident. The Astros’ bullpen did exactly what it needed to do, which is the mark of a well-constructed team.

Red Sox Never Get Close Enough

Boston showed some fight with late-inning heroics from Trevor Story and Wilyer Abreu, who each drove in a run in the seventh. Willson Contreras contributed with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. But three runs simply wasn’t going to cut it against an Astros offense that was firing on all cylinders. The Red Sox made the Astros work harder than the final margin might suggest, but they were never truly threatening to steal this game away.

Trevor Story's RBI single

This was a road victory that separates the pretenders from the contenders in baseball. The Astros didn’t beat themselves, they won convincingly by out-hitting and out-scoring a division rival at one of the toughest parks to play in. That’s exactly how you build momentum heading into the rest of May.
