Royals Stun Angels in 10-Inning Thriller Behind Lane Thomas

The Los Angeles Angels looked like they had this one locked up. Then something funny happened. The Royals, showing the kind of resilience that separates pretenders from contenders, started chipping away. Isaac Collins and Bobby Witt Jr. got into the act with solo shots, and by the time the seventh inning rolled around, the Angels’ lead had evaporated to just a 9-7 advantage. But it was Lane Thomas who delivered the knockout punch, lining a walk-off homer to left-center that sent the Kauffman Stadium crowd into delirium and gave Lucas Erceg the win despite minimal work.

Lane Thomas finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs and the game-winner. Bobby Witt Jr. added two hits and two RBIs with a 427-foot bomb that reminded everyone why this young Royals team has legitimate upside. Isaac Collins contributed two hits and two RBIs of his own, proving that Kansas City’s depth at the plate is no joke.

For the Angels, Mike Trout and Zach Neto did their jobs. Trout went deep and drove in two runs, while Neto collected three hits and two RBIs. But individual performances don’t mean squat when your starting pitcher can’t locate his fastball and your bullpen turns into Swiss cheese down the stretch. Josh Lowe‘s apparent injury exit only added insult to injury.

This loss stings for the Angels. They had every opportunity to coast to victory, yet somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Meanwhile, Kansas City proved something important on Sunday: never count these Royals out. They have the lineup and the grit to hang with anybody, and if they can maintain this level of execution, the AL Central isn’t as settled as everyone thought it was when April began.
