White Sox Edge Nationals in Defensive Battle at Rate Field

The Chicago White Sox survived a late Nationals rally to squeeze out a 5-4 victory on Friday night at Rate Field, a game that felt less like a showcase of baseball excellence and more like two teams actively trying to lose. Both bullpens melted down, both defenses looked suspect at times, and somehow the White Sox managed to be slightly less incompetent when it mattered most. That’s baseball in April, folks, and frankly, it was ugly.

Riley Cornelio’s MLB debut for Washington was a disaster wrapped in a strikeout. The kid got torched almost immediately, surrendering two runs in just 2.0 innings of work while walking four batters. Yes, four walks. When your rookie starter is more interested in putting runners on base than getting them out, you’re already fighting an uphill battle. Munetaka Murakami made Cornelio pay with a solo shot in the fourth to give Chicago an early 2-0 lead, and it looked like the Nationals were done before they started.

Sam Antonacci's go-ahead sacrifice fly

But the Nationals aren’t pushovers, and they chipped away with the kind of small-ball offense that doesn’t win championships but keeps you in games. Luis García Jr. contributed a sacrifice fly in the second, and the real damage came in the fifth when the bats woke up. A walk to Daylen Lile scored García, and Brady House drove in another run on a fielder’s choice to make it 2-2. The momentum had clearly shifted to the visiting side.

The White Sox answered back, proving that baseball is indeed a game of inches and luck. Colson Montgomery slapped a sharp single in the sixth to score Benintendi, and Andrew Benintendi’s sacrifice fly in the seventh put Chicago ahead 4-2. Everything pointed to a White Sox victory, and nobody in that stadium could have blamed you for heading to the parking lot early.

House Ties It, but Antonacci Gets the Last Word

Brady House, though, had other ideas. The kid launched a home run in the eighth to tie the game at 4-4, sending the crowd into chaos and giving the Nationals genuine hope. This was a game within a game now, a sudden-death sprint to the finish line where one mistake would decide everything.

Sam Antonacci’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference maker. It’s not the most glamorous way to win a ballgame, but Luisangel Acuña’s run scored, and suddenly the White Sox had their one-run lead back at 5-4. Seranthony Domínguez came in to close it out, notching two strikeouts in 1.0 inning to secure the save.

The Bottom Line

This game was sloppy, poorly managed in spots, and featured enough command issues from both sides to make any pitching coach weep. Riley Cornelio‘s debut will be remembered more for the damage than the promise, while Jordan Leasure‘s work (1.0 IP, 1 ER) proved to be enough in a game where pitching was secondary to pure survival instinct.

Brady House continues to impress with his power stroke (1 HR, 2 RBI), but the Nationals have to be frustrated walking out of Chicago. They had their chances, they had momentum, and they couldn’t finish the job. The White Sox, meanwhile, take the win and the confidence that comes with scratching out a result when everything was conspiring against them. Sometimes that’s all a team needs in late April.
