Meanwhile, the Phillies’ bullpen imploded spectacularly, with Tanner Banks hemorrhaging runs in just one inning of work. This wasn’t close. This was a Cubs team firing on all cylinders against a Philadelphia side that looked lost after the fifth inning.

The Cubs’ offense was patient and methodical, refusing to chase and making the Phillies pay for every mistake. Seiya Suzuki delivered the crushing blow in the seventh, launching a two-run homer that turned a relatively close game into a runaway. Nico Hoerner added his own solo shot earlier in the inning, and Michael Busch’s two-run single in the sixth set the table for what became an insurmountable lead. The Cubs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh combined, completely shutting down any comeback hopes the Phillies harbored.

Phillies’ Bats Showed Up Too Late

To their credit, the Phillies weren’t completely lifeless. Kyle Schwarber launched a solo shot in the sixth that kept things interesting temporarily. Bryce Harper followed up with his own two-run blast in the eighth to cut into the deficit. But here’s the thing, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it: when you’re trailing by three in the ninth inning and your best you can muster is an Alec Bohm sacrifice fly, you’ve already lost the narrative. Those home runs were consolation prizes, not momentum shifters.

The real indictment falls on the Phillies’ pitching staff. Banks came in during the sixth and immediately got torched, surrendering two earned runs on three hits with two walks. This is supposed to be a competitive bullpen, yet it crumbled when the Cubs needed runs to break through. The Phillies’ rotation might be serviceable, but if you can’t get quality innings from your depth guys, you’re not competing in October. That’s a problem that goes well beyond one Tuesday night loss.

Cubs Keep Rolling

For the Cubs, Caleb Thielbar secured the save with a clean 0.2 innings, though honestly, the game was over long before he took the mound. This team is clicking at precisely the right time, finding ways to win with timely hitting and dominant pitching. Imanaga’s performance was the kind of outing that makes opposing teams nervous going forward. If the Cubs can maintain this level of execution, they’re going to be a force in this division.

The Phillies will need to regroup quickly. Schwarber and Harper can’t carry the entire offensive load, and the pitching staff needs to find some answers in the bullpen. Tuesday’s loss was a complete team effort in the wrong direction, and against a Cubs squad this hot, you can’t afford those kinds of performances.
